This happened the other day not sure if any had seen anything. Was a Invergordon Tyre Service van that was squashed between 2 lorries.he was called out to fix a puncture and had his lights on and was hit from behind by another truck…
This has happened to me but luckily i was chatting to the driver at the front of the truck when another hit my old van the drivers excuse was I didnt see you!!!

Poor bugger, i heard about the crash and road closure on the radio but didn’t know the circumstances.

That’s terrible, sad news. The driver must have had his eyes off the road not to see them.

Where are all the guys who whinge about HATOS sitting on the hard shoulder ‘doing nothing’ except sitting there? And what do they reckon to this then? Would HATOS sitting there in front of it with flashing lights prevented this type of accident? I think yes.

Wannabe coppers some of you have called them. Actual life savers i would call them.

A lot of the problem in these situations is driver’s travelling too close to the vehicle in front, and so can’t see what’s going on ahead.

If I see something on the hard shoulder I’ll indicate and pull out wide so the vehicle behind me gets a chance to see what’s happening.

Poor sod,just doing his job.

My immediate thought was ah…B.O.G.O.F…Bash one,go on froo…

Apologies if there were any injuries…

really feel for his family. glad i gave up tyre fitting. i dont miss it at all. your so vunerable on the side of the road. and gotta agree about the “pretend cops” issue. they are there for a good reason just wish there was more of them about.

This is sad news and should remind people of the dangers these people sometimes face when working at the roadside.

that what i always do if i see anything on hard shoulder i indicate and use lane 2 so no problem with the wind effect either

HATOs get a lot of grief for closing lane one for hgv tyre changes and this is exactly why we do it.I know this was not on h/s, but tyre vans dont carry lights, signs and cones. The majority of truck drivers pull into lane two when we are on the h/s so the following truck has some vision and we are all very grateful.Unfortunately a small number of truck drivers think we are a waste of money and even run the rumble strip when going past us.Unfortunately, out of the six vehicles wrote off in the last eighteen months, five were on the h/s and four out of the five were hit by trucks. That doesnt include minor damage, such as mirrors, being caused by vehicles straying onto the h/s.

Three times yesterday on a trip down the M6 and M1 I moved over to lane 2 for vehicles on th hard shoulder, two were HATO vehicles and one was RAC. The road was quiet on each occasion with vehicles behind me in lane 2, not close behind, but lane 3 empty and on two of the occasions a vehicle came past me after i had returned to lane one, 1 truck and 1 car, and the drivers of these vehicles gave me a blast of the horn coupled with an assortment of hand gestures, the car driver also then decided to brake test me. I can only assume this was for moving into lane 2 for ‘no reason’ as I had not overtaken a moving vehicle while out in lane 2. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

I remember one occasion not long ago when I moved into lane 2 for a HATO vehicle on the hard shoulder and the truck behind started to undertake me. :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :unamused: :unamused: With antics like that this sort of accident will continue to happen.

I do…I got 4 cones and 2 signs and 1 cone flashing light(I did have 2 but 1 got run over by a truck who was to close…)
Whenever i am at the side of the road and am on the offside i always keep a eye out for hgv/busses bearing down on me…MANY THANKS for anyone who pulls over even by 1 metre it does help keep the wind rush down a little…
I think HATOS do a reasonable job a lot of the time but i have stopped and help a few car drivers who have broken down on a bend and towed them to safety 1…

Sad news about the tyre fitter.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Back in the late 70’s, 80’s, I lost a friend, and colleague, to an errant truck driver who strayed onto the hard shoulder on the M5 at West Bromwich.

Linking back to the thread on persons joining Motorways/D.C.'s and observational awareness, a few weeks ago I was driving a car ‘up North’ to visit ill out-laws. I hate commuting. And always have done. I enjoy driving for a living, but I hate commuting.

So there I am, on the M6, with the cruise control set at the mid 60’s, which means that I am overtaking the trucks, but using Lane 1 a lot of the time.

Approaching a truck in Lane 1, I see in the mirrors a Pug 309 gaining on me in Lane 2. I signal right thereby giving the driver three choices. Speed up, slow down, or move into an empty Lane 3. So, what does this idiot do? No more than get alongside the ‘C’ post of my car and then just sit there. Now I know that my car is probably about a quarter of a ton heavier than his, and has a degree of corrosion in that area which an insurance claim could easily rectify.

So I give him a ‘squeeze’. I move the offside of the vehicle onto the Lane Line. Still he sits there. Still Lane 3 is clear. Still I’m getting closer to the truck in front of me. Still the moron sits there, so I ‘squeeze’ another foot of carriageway. Whereupon he puts his hand on the horn and backs off. A totally ineffective exercise as my missus, sitting next to me is totally unaware of any animosity.

I’ve now got Lane 2 which enables me to overtake the truck. “Intellectually challenged” car driver then identifies that Lane 3 is clear and uses it to overtake, and in the process gives me a ‘glaring look’. I smile back at him.

We are surrounded by idiots. Just accept the fact and deal with it accordingly.

That’s awful. So sad.

Sympathies to the tyre fitters family but I agree totally with Krankee on this.

There are just too many drivers of trucks and cars on auto pilot who have not got a clue about the surrounding vehicles or approaching hazards. That can only explain how a modern car with good brakes and suspension can end up half way up an embankment with the driver lookiing bemused.

Truck drivers do the same when they roll a truck on a roundabout and wonder. “Now how did that happen”? It will be everybodies fault except the truck driver

Very sad and thoughts to the family.

You know all he did was go out to work one morning and not come home.

Just like we do HATO’s, Truckers, Cops etc. etc.

This came as such a shock to me. I know both the tyre fitter and the driver of the truck he went out to.
Condolencies to his family and friends.

This happened on a D/C with no hard shoulder.
Heard tonight that the police are going to be targetting speeding HGV’s on the A9. Don’t know if it’s true or not,but be warned if you are heading up this way.

Over here it is mandatory to slow down to 60 ks and pass wide for emergency vehicles and recovery vehicles. If you pass a police officer on the shoulder at 100 ks he will come after you and the fines are huge. On single carriageways they still expect you to go out into the other side of the road to pass by if you can.

A damned good policy if you ask me. In the US the police don’t even look when they swing their doors open on the shoulder because they are confident that the traffic will have slowed if it cannot pass wide.

Similar but different. I heard that there is a 1 in 8 chance of being killed as a flagman here. Scary.

yes highlander they are only checking hgv’s on the A9 as they want anyone who saw anything before the accident

allways move out when its possible but it does amaze how many dont :unamused: :unamused:
