Type of work for a new driver?

Hi all, I passed my class 2 (cat C) on the 27/10/12 and im currently working for birmingham city council as a driver in the yard shunting. Im very grateful for the work but I feel its not giving me as much experience as I want so im looking for another job my question to you is : what do you think is the best line of work to go into as a new driver? I know with little experience its always going to be a battle to get someone to take me on but I hear that some types of companies are more likely to give me a chance some people have recommend skip hire companies and others have said go do my class 1 (C&E) for example has anyone got any past experience with this and any advice is greatly appreciated thank you all in advance

It is hard but not impossible to get work and sure some employers do take on new drivers, as your up in birmingham I think that wiseman dairies have taken on new starts but it’s multi drop and early starts mainly but good experience.

I think spending more money on class 1 when you don’t have any experience might just lead to you asking the same question when you have that licence, that’s not to say don’t do it, I did but still not driving class 1 yet after a year so get into a company and try to work up form there.

Hope you find something that suits

Thanks takemehome good advice ive put a application in to wisemans so fingers crossed… I travle to Birmingham from dudley so thats another reason for looking else where… once ive got the money I think im going to do my class 1 just so its there for the future

Skips used to be easier to get on to due to the fact that the load is rubbish and not valuable. This seems to of altered now (in leeds area) as they won’t take you without experience.

Wisemans got bought out recently by Muller and they are undergoing massive changes.

stay with the council it will only get harder working for any non gov body…

I’d suggest some sort of food retail multidrop like Brakes or 3663, I started that way, didn’t want to but a job I had lined up never happened and I needed something fast.

Although the job wasn’t really my thing, it was probably the best thing I ever could have done. It gave me experience in different vehicles, early starts, taught me London, and doing 20 or 30 schools or shops in a day certainly does wonderful things for you manoeuvring skills.

After about 9 months I was much more employable for other jobs as I’d got some time under my belt and learnt how to do things.

I started for a local builders merchant doing multi drops with a hiab. Got a start after that with another firm on 6 and 8 wheel tippers, did that for ten months and did my C+E. The tipper firm would not let me drive there artics so I left and signed with agencey’s. Most of my work now is C+E and 3 or 4 days a week. Happy days.

Something will work out for you, just stay focused.

Thanks folks loads of great advice there and lots of things for me to do really appreciate the time you all put in thanks very much

If your on for the council why not try getting them to put you in a dustbin lorry?
Will get you plenty of experience on manouvering etc which could be valuable when you apply for something else.

thanks lee27 thats my plan mate i keep on at them trying to get them to send me out its waiting for a driver to be ill or on holiday all the rounds are currently covered but this is why i took the job  i can see what your saying tho thanks for the post
