Paramedics were called out shortly after 11pm to the accident on the dual carriageway at Hanchurch.
They found the car had suffered massive damage as a result of the impact. The man and woman were confirmed dead at the scene.
A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: "The crash happened on a dual carriageway section of the road. It was raining heavily at the time.
"When crews arrived, they found a car that had collided with the back of a lorry that was in a lay-by. The car had suffered massive damage.

Wonder how it happened? I can only presume they skidded of the road inton the layby . . .

RIP, very sad.

There’s a layby on the A10 N/Bound just before the Harlow exit. You see the signs for the exit then this layby appears and the first time I came that way guess what I did? Yep, turned into the layby thinking it was the exit…

It’s easy done with the right combination of circumstances.

In this strange world we live in, even a suicide pact can’t be ruled out I suppose.

listening to signal 1 today, 1 of the dead was a young girl. not nice for the family.

Ive seen the exact same accident in the flesh and its pretty nasty, chances are they thought it was a slip road. Not paying attention can cost you your life unfortunatly.

came back incar today and it really did come down, wouldnt let daughter[20 ], go out in car, recipe for a accident[knowing her shed get down behind dash board if thunder/lightening started], not good when you need to see where your going

Unfortunately I don`t think so, the layby concerned is best part of a mile from the m6 junction, think it was a combination of speed, rain and a poorly lit road.
The driver was 26 and his passenger was a 17yr old girl. A terrible waste of two young lives.

So how is she going to learn how to drive in this kind of weather   sorry & before you ask no I dont know her or you  but years ago when I had my bike ( young 17 on L ) we had a lot of snow that year & I never stopped riding so actually learnt how to drive in bad weather

A waste of 2 young lives RIP

Did the parked lorry have lights on or not?

As soon as I started to read the thread i knew what i was going to post before I saw your post:

Expect a big tightening up on trucks parking in layby’s overnight unlit.
Unless there is a physical divide a layby is classed as part of the highway & so lighting regs apply.

When we get on LED all around the rig (nearly there) it won’t be a problem as the battery drain will be so much less than with incandescant bulbs.

My condolences to the family & friends of the deceased.

If you know the A500, this layby is just after the after the A34 as you climb the hill and then drop down the other side to J15.

Its a strange bit of road and the bend is a lot sharper than it looks, add to that poor weather and lack of lighting.

Also, maybe its because of my age (43) but what is a 26 year old guy doing with a 16 year old girl in his car late at night.

Very sad for all the families involved.

RIP to the deceased.

I’m amazed there isn’t some bumps on the last layby at the northern end of the A500 heading towards the M6.

How on earth people get a loaded artic truck out from a standing start on a tight left bend :open_mouth: , (especially a left ■■■■■■) out of a space with a couple of yards accelaration space in front of it :open_mouth: and up to a 1/2 decent speed before something slams in the back of it is beyond me, the way other motorists, trucks etc fly down there i just keep waiting to see an accident  .

I always shut my eyes now when i come round the bend :grimacing:

not a easy one,i could of sent her out in it,but what if it went pear shaped and she ended up on a concrete slab somewhere, would i be a responcible parent in doing that  , i dont think i would, i hope she has a steady learning curve than one big one that ends up in tears, but i do know what your saying.

I didn’t realise that moralism mattered so much. He could have been her boyfriend or they could have been planning to get married, on the other hand she maybe just asked him to give her a lift to a local car meeting.

I am 52 and find it perfectly acceptable. My parents had a 9 year age difference and both perfectly respectable, the eldest of them born in 1921.

As mentioned:

RIP to the the deceased and sympathy to the families

yep can understand that or you could take her out for a few lessons on how to drive in that kind of weather as remember giving my son g/friend then 18 not long passed test some advice on how to drive in the snow ( we had late last year/early this ) my son also rode his bike in some very bad rain ( bit like we just had ) he is only 21 now was a couple year back

A waste of 2 young lives RIP

Maybe I was hasty Wheelnut, I just think it could show a lack of maturity on the drivers part.
I do not have any children myself so I suppose I am not quailfied to comment.
I just thought that if I was her father it would be a question that would haunt me.

I based my observation on mates of mine, who have daughters of a similar age and if a guy that age showed up on the doorstep…well you can guess the rest.

A very sad story all round, and if you thought I was being moralistic then I apologize.

Once again condolences to the families.
