What an eventful morning, on way back from Luton, going up the A45 by sixfields in Northampton there was a Slovenian artic in left hand lane Ford Ranger in the right, both were going straight on, I saw it was going to happen before it happened, they both entered the roundabout at the same time, and when they were in the 9o clock position on the roundabout, the trailer was cutting in far too much, he’d set himself up wrong before he got on the roundabout. The pick up tried to move across to miss the trailer cutting in, but it was to no avail the trailer caught the front quarter ripping off part of the bumper and smashed the rear n/s light cluster and dented the rear quarter.
They both pulled over off the roundabout, I pulled in front of them, the police [999] didn’t want to know about it, the woman who it turns out is the gal who owns the snack van on our ind. estate didn’t know what to do in terms of getting details and stuff for insurance etc as she’d never see this guy again. I said if you are injured they should send a paramedic out to check you over and I believe a police officer will attend as well as that is the way it goes. She did look shaken, and said her neck was painful so I said it was best to get checked out there and then to make sure she was ok, she rang the local plod who sent out paramedic and police who checked her over, and got statements from the two of them, and took my details in case they need me but he was sure it’d be a straight forward case, good thing is though as I was leaving she said I’ve earned a free brekkie
Then as I was almost home coming up Great Billing Way, a Ceva truck had jack knifed on the roundabout and had either spilled diesel or had hazardous stuff on board as the fire brigade had the containment sausage tubes out to stem the flow of whatever it was coming from the vehicle. Just as I was getting up to the roundabout they stopped us in our tracks, put up road closed signs and turned us round.
So I’ve decided to stay home for the rest of the day and not do any diy or generally anything as this stuff comes in threes and I don’t want something bad happening to me today
it always annoys me when cars try and pass you on an island…eg.the A43 from M1 TO M40…miles of dual carriageway…but you can bet on every island cars try and squeeze by…why?

Because they know that the truck wil have to slow down a lot and their plan is to use their superior acceleration to get by sharpish but often fails due to their lack of planning.
Truck driver is quick to assess when to go but has less power
Car driver is slower to assess when to go but has more power
The two end up at the same point at the same time !!!
That is usually what goes on in the heads of car drivers and, of course, what is missing is the safer plan of passing the truck on the dual with their higher available speed.
What they do not want to do is to go faster in order to pass the truck when the truck is at speed because in their minds, that could be dangerous
How do I know this? - I’ve taken out a few ‘more mature’ drivers recently to assist them with their lack of confidence and this is one issue that most have described as being ‘frightening’ !!
If the Truck is crossing into his lane he should give way … Or take the correct approach in the first place.
NOTE**** If the police say ok just exchange details. ( When a Foriegn Driver is Involved ) To get the police to show up just say someone is injured …They will soon show up…
And always carry a camera get picture of the position of the vehicles involved ans if they are in your lane …

Rog so why don’t the instructors teach car drivers the hazards properly from day 1 when they start driving?.You could see what was going to happen there before they’d both even entered the roundabout. My dad taught me to drive cars not any instructor. He taught me to stay back from trucks on the approach to roundabouts and follow them through and then if it’s safe you use your superior acceleration to overtake them on the straight afterwards while they are lumbering back up to speed. That’s much better than being sandwiched between the roundabout and the side of a truck.

I always mention a gun is being waved around, that allways gets the PLOD interested, you get the full monty, helicopter the lot
maybe because he was driving a left ■■■■■■ he had to take a different line into the roundabout so he could still see vehicles approaching from the right as he entered it.
And there is a bit in the highway code telling drivers to be aware that large vehicles may need more room.

I wish I knew the answer to that - maybe they do and the learner just forgets it all once the test has been passed
SAME OLD PROBLEM - pass test then NOWT

If he crosses that white line he is still in the wrong …
He should have blocked both lanes entering the roundabout …
If you are taking a tight turn you use more of the road you are driving into but you make sure it’s clear before you do ?

Are you saying he should or shouldn’t occupy both lanes?
I often do this and I thought it was “taking command of the road” or some such.

Because they are brain dead, swivel eyed, pointy headed scrotums who are trying to spice up their otherwise meaningless existence of hawking tat around the country in their company Mondeo by pretending to be Jenson bleeding Button

Great idea in theory but the width of a truck is’nt always enough to stop the committed ones from trying to get down side or the other and you’d often need to move over long before the roundabout because a truck has to start decelerating long before the cars do and what do you do about roundabouts with three lanes or more on the approach with two or more marked straight ahead and one or more turning right?.You can’t use one truck’s width to cover all of that. It’s wrong to ask truck drivers to cater for the shortcomings in car driver training and road layouts.

If the truck crossed into the cars lane how is it the shortcomings of the car driver ? As someone stated the truck driver is the proffesional .
