Kerragy:
I was speaking to a Goldstar driver on Wednesday. Cab hopping is usual for the first 6 or 8 months for trampers. He was struggling to get 3 nights out. Subbies getting all of the distance work. Pulling the trampers back to base to use the unit for a night shift is pretty normal now he said.
Sounds like Maritime. Was speaking to a Maritime driver a little while ago, they are thinking of knocking tramping on the head down at Felixstowe, Too many wagons, cheaper for the company to run a container up during the night and have another driver from another depot swap it.
I was talking to a Brummie ex-Maritime driver a few weeks ago who was saying the same, and reckons Maritime are trying are trying to cut down on tramping on all fronts. He was technically a tramper with Maritime, but he said he only ever got a night-out on an occasional Friday night, and he’d do a sixth day to run-in on Saturday, but this was only something to do with the railport not working on Friday night. Much better to get a chain going of day and night men from different depots, the container being like a baton in a relay race.

Plus, why have a driver sleeping in a truck when you can return it to base and use it for a night shift?

Either that, or put the container on the train. Maritime have two of their own railports & then have depots strategically placed right on the doorstep of Freightliner terminals etc. As a result, unless a container has to get from port-customer or vice versa quickly, there is little need for long distance journeys by road & thus trampers.
The wagon I’m driving is subbing for Maritime out of Leeds and usually we will deliver locals but collect to go to the ports, its rare that I box off a loaded box at a local railport. This week was a little different than usual, almost every box went off at either Freighliner at Leeds or DBS at Wakefield, the last one was load in Saltburn (TS12) and box off in Southampton. I put that down to it being a Bank Holiday on Monday so they had to cram five days work in to 4 days.
But as for the long waits:
Tuesday - 3 hrs at Sutton in Ashfield to load.
Wednesday - 2.5 hours tip at Moreley + 2.25 hours to load at Rotherham
Thursday - 1hr to tip in Peterlee + 2hrs10 to load in Hartlepool
Friday - 1hr to tip at Saltburn.
Saturday - 58 minutes to box on and box off at Southampton.

Big players buy and buy another big players.
Maritime buy Road…
Culina buy Great bear.
Nft buy NR EVans.
Turners buy Goldstar.
Who will be next■■?
XPO and Ceva grapple to the death over Automotive Parts leaving Page to pick up the pieces?
If Turners bought Mcintyres and Goldstar for the MSC work then the next one is Wincantons and if you notice they are the same as Goldstar - no new motors recently and apparently have off hired a lot of skels recently - mind they did loose Allports to Maritime.

The rumour up here not so long ago was that Goldstar were buying Wincanton
When I asked for clarification from a contact @ WCL, he laughed and said “no chance, GS are skint”…
Wincanton aren’t having a good time in the boxes game at the mo. My money would be on maritime making a bid for them as their box side is on its downers too
Cosmic:
Been a while since Goldstar bought any new trucks and you don’t see them in any kind of numbers like you used to.
Apparently desperate for drivers around my parts, I can’t imagine why from what I’ve heard about them!
Not that desperate as they won’t train anyone without container experience (which is why I didn’t even get an interview, and they didn’t even know where my application form was).

What, pray, experience do they feel is so important that it makes those without it unworthy?
How to tailgate another truck at 56mph?
How to get a 9’6" box under a 14’ bridge?
How to pull out of laybys into 50+mph traffic from standstil?
How to operate a twist lock?
Wouldn’t say Hanjin would affect much, product still has to move, just under another line. Trampers probably on the decline but there’s always still going to be a need for a few nights out in any case, besides the property investment with all brand new driver facilities across the country, they can’t be in any rush to stop it.

I think any talk of a collapse of Maritime in the container sector is hopeful more than anything, in the same way there is always talk of Stobarts falling apart everytime they lose some business or have some mishap.
