Turf delivery

Does anyone do turf work on artics? Delivery specifically and do u do diy stores, residential etc…thanks

It was my first job after passing c+e, with a turf delivery firm near derby. Went to interview, they said “we’ll train you up on a starting rate of £7.50”, one day later (one drop) it was “heres the keys drive, get on with it”. Three months later still on £7.50. Driving an fh12 with a short two axle curtainsider and moffett. They had me delivering to all sorts of daft places you wouldnt even want to take a 7.5tonner to. Always on my back about the time it took me to do drops even though i was rarely given adequate instructions or accurate addresses), implying i should be ignoring tacho laws, speed limits, etc. Firm had no concept of health and safety, moffett was shagged - leaking hydraulic oil everywhere. Told not to strap load down. Fuel card never worked. Bloody cowboy operation, grrrr. Maybe bigger firms would be better but i doubt it :-/

hmm That company on TV with the GREEN trucks did turf didn’t they …

So I was told

I do. But only in a 8x2 with a Manitou on the back.

Delivering to the nurseries and garden centres is a piece of ■■■■. Residential is a different ball game, but it’s all about working out the closest point you can put the truck to get the quickest and EASIEST offload.

It depends if you have a Moffett or Manitou on the back, if you haven’t, then anywhere you are going will have site forks so will more than likely be plenty big enough. If you are self tipping then see above. We do have 1 trailer with the mounts for the forklift on the back, we use it to do some of our own haulage in the winter, tried it for a month during March and it was a pain and the extra time it took did not warrant it’s extra capacity for residential drops.

I do it around London and surrounding areas and it’s really not that hard. But remember you will be carrying a dying product in the warmer months, so you can expect “where are you?” a lot.

Out of interest, who is advertising? ?

Not proffesionaly, but picked up 20 square meters in the back off my Passat when I wanted to returf back garden, still picking bits off dirt out off the car, but the back garden looks a treat.

Tip off the day, dont buy from big DIY chains, phone round and find your local grower, cheaper and better quatlity

There was a turf supply company near MK years ago that advertised for drivers every day, it was a con :exclamation: When you contacted them the insisted on a day spent driving with them to ‘assess’ your driving, the day was unpaid then they told you no, next day another applicant did the same, they got free labour for years.

F reds. Pmd you

I do turf through the Summer, not on artics though, 18t with a Hiab. Never done moffet but its great being able to just drop it over the fence straight into the back garden.

Our morning delivery comes on a curtain side via general haulier. They have to sweep the trailer out before they go somewhere else.

Pain if they come in late, especially in the busy periods when everybody is expecting a first drop.

I do the odd surf and turf at wetherspoons ,does that count

Or cheaper still pass a turf lorry pulled over re strapping his load because one piece of rope across the back didn’t do the job carry on up said road to find rolls off turf all over the road. Pull your lorry up launch as much as u can on the back make a detour back to your house on the way back to the yard and hey presto nice lawn for free .
