Trucks overtaking on the left

Macski:
What I don’t get is people who happiky sit there with a big truck/bus behind them.

WAs driving down the M66 the other day and every time I went t over take a car it matched my speed and when I pulled back in again the car in front reduced it again. You would think people would rather drive a few miles quicker and not have a big vehicle following them.

Might be better for you but for the rest of the people on the motorway for the next mile behind you, not so good.

Have you never seen the traffic that builds up when 2 slower moving vehicles are in the first 2 lanes and all cars are then trying to overtake in the outside lane?

Im not everly converned. These are the same ones who have been hogging the middle lane through the roadworks holding me up.
I dont do it on the A14

. Now, moving over 1 lane to let a lorry merge in from a slip road and then being stuck head-to-head as he refuses to let you back in, that’s a different thing and happens all the time. So now you have to slow down (and slow down everyone behind you) so you can get back to the slow lane and everyone thinks you’re the [zb]

Is this OK if you’re clearly faster than the truck already on the motorway? I.e. you’re gaining/passing him while on the slip road?

Many slip roads are on an incline so trucks there are slower than their max speed or they had a dead start following a traffic light/roundabout shortyl before that. They see the flow of traffic behind you and think it’s better to undertake than slow down, let him get back in and then wait for a gap forever so f- that

Sounds like you need to find a better job.
Yet to find an employer that pays day rate for the benefit of the employee.

Yes, bidding my time until my license is a little older. It can work out to £19-£22ph but it disregards nights, bank holidays, and
Changing shifts.
Also I’m really worried I won’t like other trucks as much as my Mercedes Benz.

Weve all been in this situation. You are overtaking a car at 1 or 2mph more tham him, then he decides to accelerate away. Then you indicate to move back to the slow lane,ah but you cant because a truck has started overtaking on the left now,so you have to wait for him to get out the way.It really annoys me.
Do you do this?
Maybe you would like to explain why you cant understand its entirely my fauly Im stuck in the middle lane!

Do not overtake unless you have the speed to do it.
Generally the trucks I drive do about 56mph. I set my CC at 50 to 52. Which gives me up to 6mph extra umph if needed. So, I am never in a situation of trying to overtake a vehicle that is doing 1mph more than me.

This is the issue. Don’t get in the rat race of trying 1mph or 0.5mph overtakes just so you can stick to your limiter. I used to do it as well, it is a easy habit to get into but I personally find it is just more stressful.

Not everyone is paid by the hour! If the motorway is empty enough I’ll happily take miles to overtake someone and not be stressed about it.

Sounds like the words of a new driver!

Hopefully you’ll grow out of it pretty quickly. Although judging by the amount of elephant racing I see, plenty don’t.

If you were stuck behind someone who’s limiter was set 1 kph lower than yours for 4 hours, your journey would take 2 mins longer. Think about that next time you spend 10 mins overtaking somebody.

It just makes you look a clown.

It’s not just about the 2 mins. It’s about having uninterrupted vision in front of me for four hours instead of having an artic in front of me. The only people to see are me and the other driver, so who cares what he thinks. Anyway, it’s very rarely as little as 1kph difference.

Mmm,when I see lorries, everyone is in a mad rush.I dont think we can afford to knock the cruise down even by 1/2 mph.In any case, what happens when you get to the next car,you slow down again so by the time you get there ,youve lost a lot of speed.
Me,I dont mind spending a long time in the middle lane overtaking. Its just as wide as the left lant, and it goes the same way,so I think we need to embrace this idea more,as lorry drivers ,get out of this idea of needing to be in the left lane all the time.

Most motorways round here are 4 or 5 lanes.

You do you, my man.

But I put it to you…

Regardless if the motorway is empty or not, if you are taking miles to overtake somebody then the speed difference is indeed very small. And you have obstructed your own vision for however many miles before trying to get close enough to overtake and are then going to obstruct the view of the truck behind you unless he’s like me and just backs off because he’s comfortable with the size of his ■■■■■.

And if it wasn’t about the time you wouldn’t be saying you can’t afford to drop a click because you are on a day rate :unamused:

For a bit of balance, I am paid by the load and the difference between doing 1 load a day and 2 can be as much as £100 or more a day so I have been known to crack on. But I don’t overtake everything 0.0000001 mph slower than me or leave another truck that has had the decency to move over and let me on at a junction out in the middle lane because I’m a bit quicker. That just shows immaturity and a lack of courtesy imo.
