Over 3,500 reports of crime against lorries were recorded in the UK in 2004.
Your lorry is your livelihood. Advice in this fact sheet may help you from be-coming a victim of crime.
Please take the time to read this infor-mation and discuss any questions that you may have with your employer and keep it safe in your cab for future reference
. If you witness anything suspicious or criminal behaviour, call the police by dialling 999. Always let you employer know what is happening

Everyday Security

  • Hide your personal property from view
  • Avoid regular routes or stops for newspapers or meals — a recog-nisable pattern makes an easier target for thieves
    . - Never give lifts
  • Make sure you understand and use the vehicle’s security equip-ment and check it is working properly
. - If your vehicle or trailer has roof markings and is stolen, make sure you tell the police to help in identification

Be Secure
When you leave your vehicle, always lock it and always take your keys with you. Never leave keys in the cab.
Always make sure your cab and the load compartment are secure. When loading / unloading — lock the cab. When driving — lock the load compartment. Check all security devices are working

Park Safely

  • Whenever possible decide where you are to park overnight before starting your journey — use secure parking facilities
  • Park your vehicle within sight when you leave it to eat
  • Park with the loading doors close to another vehicle, building or wall
  • When returning, check all round for signs of interference, including the load security seals
  • Do not arrive at a scheduled delivery point early — arrange for secure parking if you are early

Plan Ahead

Plan your route beforehand. That way you will not have to stop to ask directions. If you know where you are going you will not be mislead with wrong directions.
Arrange with your company a procedure for authorising changes to any pre-arranged delivery address

Be Aware

Avoid talking about loads or routes with other drivers or customers (including radios and telephones)
Be cautious if you are asked by someone you do not know to deliver at a different ad-dress than that shown on your paperwork
