hiya,
Well Rowland it’s a case of horses for courses ideal they was for “capacity”
loads but a 32 tonner which they was supposed to be, never, after my first
trip with a brand new one I asked for my old Atki back with the ■■■■■■■
in it didn’t get it, it had been delicenced so I went elsewhere rather than
drive the 80, and I wasn’t alone, in fact Rowland you are the only person
who I’ve ever heard sing their praises, good job we’re not all alike, or TN
UK would be boring and I for one wouldn’t be a contributor, now come on
own up who cheered .
thanks harry, long retired.
The 80 was sold as a 24 ton tractor in Europe, as these brochure photos show:
What has this got to do with the title of the thread? Everything!

dad had a scania 81 running at 32 tons and loved it. had it for 7 years then
he changed it for a scania 111 but always preferred the 81
Sorry Harry but I’ve driven 80’s, 81 , 82, 83, and loved every one, yes I would have liked a 111 , but compared to Atki’s which I loved, and Big J’s I’ll take the little Scania anytime, comfortable, good heaters, nice light steering!!

Exactly! Alot of drivers didn’t care about the slight ‘lack’ of power - they were glad they had a comfortable safe motor for once ! power steering , radio you could hear , heater that worked syncro box ,oh & not havin to put a blanket on the bonnet…Its a no brainer
La Janquera, October 1981. I was 19 and second driver on the wagon and drag as the law wouldn’t let me drive it on my own until I was 21!!

hiya,
Slight lack of power, they was rubbish it tells you further they was only designed
as 24 tonners, a six wheeled rigid yes ideal as a tipper round the doors, give me
speed and pull anytime over fancy cabs, Oh’ and my 80 managed to have three
breakdowns on it’s first trip, but to be fair the 80 wasn’t the only pile of crap at
that time another foreign motor I’ve also driven and purporting to be a 32 tonner
was the Volvo 86 I used to blow them off like they was stopped coming up from
South Wales and that was with a Roller engined Big J and I was always full whack.
