TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

I did a load of plywood from somewhere in Switzerland the other side of zurich if I remember right about 1976 through H G Brown in one of his tilts, I can’t remember where I unloaded but I do remember coming into a roundabout on the dual carriageway near Ashford and some silly impatient ■■■■■ came round and cut me up causing me to brake hard in the turn with the result that some of the banding holding one of the stacks down snapped and it slid across the trailer and the rear trailer wheels came up at least 2 ft, steering quickly to the right managed to bring it back down but it was as close as I ever want to get to rolling a load. The rest of the journey was done with the rear of the trailer leaning to one side and taken with extreme care.

Chipboard was just as bad, loads of the stuff came down from Caberboard,Scotland, very slippery stuff indeed!!!

David :astonished:

Martin Husk always was Coombe Valley Transport and Thomas Wall.

The other Husk, the one at the top of Lydden Hill was John who later sold out.

We used to do chipboard at Kingswood, some of that went to Chirk. This load wasn’t destined for there but even if it was it wouldn’t have got there! It had come from Kent with another vehicle and dropped in the yard. I collected it Monday morning for delivery. It was roped up and I thought sufficiently as it had come from Kent. Unbeknown to me the loading driver had removed the ratchet straps he had used to get it that far. The rope (brand new) snapped and it all slid off into the bus stop. No one was waiting for a bus! The Plods were amazingly friendly and helpful. My card was good and 20mph was recorded. My Ex Mrs. turned up, coffee and sandwiches for all (Plod inc.) until another of our vehicles turned up to “recover” the load. The Plods got overtime and no one got hurt or nicked!

Gazzer that old chipboard is nearly as slippery as you, cheers Buzzer.

Was told that mick sold up and has gone to spain,if i see his ex wife ill find out more.No idea bout dempseys, not in the trucking world any more, got out before back, knee, ankle, and shoulder got any worse.

Proper well travelled looking F88!

Ex C+B Thatcham?

Could be, trying to think, thought C & B had white roofs too?

Hi all but what was it it’s got a 290 grille with a 240 air stack ■■?
Regards Jimski

It’s ex Harding Bros, Avonmouth. A 240 with 290 grille.

It’s a 290 (TD100B) New to Brookes Machinery Transport in Bristol then went to Hardings which is who I bought it from. I sold it after the Livestock transport toPortugal dried up. Steve Bennett bought it to use on Javelin work and last heard of pulling livestock at Ron Marsh of Stafford?

Ha , know what you mean Gazzer, we used to load after load Whilst on RS Hills from Yvetot just outside Le Havre to Hygena I Scunthorpe, although it was frowned upon we used to wet the chipboard bearers in between the packs, they used to loose a couple of boards but at least it got there safe!!

Hi Truckerash you would not have any pics of a London company Barry A Titterall as in the early 70’s I met up with two of there motors scania 140’s if I remember right and they took me under there wing as it was my first venture to Italy, me I had a 110 so had ajob to keep with them especially over Mont Cenis. They came from some where in the East India dock road if I remember but it was fourty years ago , cheers Buzzer

It’s taken me an age to get even halfway through this lot but I remember most of the firms whose trucks are pictured on here. I started off with McKellar doing Italies and Spains. Then most of the time after that (many years) working for a bloke from Sevenoaks who had just 3 motors and did the European traction work for firms all over the uk. Mainly fridges around Eastern and Western Europe. Nice job. Never got rushed. Just went out, got done, and got back. Did 31 years in the saddle altogether. Called it a day now though. Wouldn’t have swapped it for anything else. Happy days…!!!

Frightening paperwork and equally frightening “Zoll”.

Hi Sean, I can’t seem to find that photo of the Zust and Bachmeir trailer at the moment but I shall keep searching for it.
It’s so sad to hear about Colin but give him our best regards and show him this photo which he may of not seen before.

And hopefully this will bring back a few memories for him.

Regards Steve.

taken on the spanish border,

Just saw the 2 McKellar motors. I did a spell for him. Really nice bloke to work for. I had a LHD 141. Shame it’s not in the pic with the other 2.

Does anybody have any pictures of “Ifield Transport” trucks, Based in Crawley, West Sussex. They did regular runs to Luxembourg with air freight, and also some dutch work to.
They run some Scania 110s, DAF, and Sed Atk 400 on the continent plus owner drivers.
Company has long since gone, new owners and new name “PF Couriers” now.
