There were some seriously poor roads in Spain as late as the 1990s. I remember one fine evening driving from Bilbao or San Sebastien direct to Valencia, Direct, top to bottom. At one point I thought I’d missed a bend and driven into a field the road was so bad, but no. The road surface had melted and hardened so many times it was like the surface of the moon. ■■■■■■■ awful. I ended up at about 15mph for some 20 odd miles
I know this is supposed to be the 80’s but here are a few photos from the very early 70’s when I worked for W & M WOOD’s from Enfield. We were subbing for Jess B Woodcock doing France and Switzerland. Chris Hudson was the transport manager for J B Woodcock’s until he went of to do his own thing and became the success he was. Excuse the poor quality of the photo’s only had a box brownie camera in them days.
This is me loading out of the banhoff in Basle, note the bars around the back axle’s to stop any body nicking the wheels, the Volvo in the background belonged to Roger Nicholls who subbed for us, used to double man it with Steve Goodman who sadly got shot dead working for Astran’s, the Volvo was very unlucky it was involved in a couple of accidents and ended up on Maverton’s. the side boards on them trailers were very heavy
Another time in the banhoff loading, a better picture of the axle cage. Nice new trailer by the look’s
Roy (Egg on legs) Harknet’s motor at the yard in Old Road, all the fleet were 110’s or 140’s all left hand drive.
The first Euro driver on there was Bob Emery other drivers I can remember were:
Big Billy Parker ( had to have a140 just to pull him without a load)
Jimmy Grant
Dave Stallman
Fred Gilby
Freddy Keys
And many more I have forgotten
Ossie Duce

Whoa! Bloody brilliant - any more from inside it please?
Love these panoramic shots of Dover from back in the day. Can spend ages trying to put names to old trailer colours, spotting the old trucks and names of companies long gone. Great pic.
Those bars keeping the thieves off the wheels look as mad as F OssieD I take it the driver could unlock them■■?
CM shot of Dover is ace too…
superb photo, as regular in dover port i cant beleive how much its changed

Got to agree, the yellow vans, are they Ferrymaster service vans or is it the guy from Dover (Brit European) who did our last minute repairs, tilt cords and diesel.
Bottom left, a Spaniard, a couple of Hungarocamion and on the right, “On the bay for inspection”
Interesting for me to see at the back on the sea wall a couple of ICI liveried Prestwin design tankers.
More, much more please
How many eggs on legs were there, as I was often called it too, but the originals must have been Kenny B, or was it Roy H.
I remember reading about Steve Goodman being shot as we used to load out of Chemie Linz for Colloids in Bradford
basf now mate colloids is no more.nearly wasnt a few year ago when it set on fire
Hi Fly Sheet,
Yes not the best of Idea’s, good Idea not thought through, the side bar went through slots in the ends of the cross member’s and were secured by padlocks with combination locks, the combination numbers were written on the back of the trailer Carnet or kept in the office, but were soon lost or forgotten, then you had to revert to a hacksaw or bolt croppers, then you couldn’t put the side bar back on so it got thrown in a ditch or somewhere and so that was the end of that Idea. I think Chris Hudson had them on some of his trailers for a while then went off the Idea

I don’t know who the first egg on legs was, but Roy had a little lion stamped on his

Have just sat reading through the threds and wow some old memories there. As i work abroad in Iraq & all my old albums are in storage back in Canada not able to post many pictures but my brother has a few so I shall post them. I got my start on int work with Tanker Bill of East India dock, a scania 111 LHD to Italy. one trip then the insurance company said i was not old enough & not enough experiance as you had to be 3 years driving or older than 24 ( for his insurance company, cant speak for others). I then went to Holland & got a job with a small family firm called Geliton from near Eindhoven, many weekend parked in Dover docks with other Geliton drivers, thats when the Dinner was a cabin called the greasy Spoon & you could get in the terminal via a side door where the bar was located. We ran UK Holland & Germany to Turkey, backloading out of Romania when that Mad man Chachesque was in Power, Free ■■■ was the best thing there at the time!!! Then i met Cyrol Knowles doing bulk powder UK / Germany, He had a yard behind a truck stop on the old A13 nr rainham, his main work was with Civil & Marine by the new QE2 bridge, but he had 2 trucks doing European, Collin Atwell on the DAF space Cab & Me in a new F10. Collin did reefe3r work to Italy & I did powder to Holland or a tilt to Swiss. Then i was with Ralph Davies for a number of years from the late 80’s to around 91 or 92. ps how do i attach the pics

The pale blue motor, coupled to a fridge (right of centre of pic) looks like a Borderer with a sleeper.
To the right of that the F88 looks like one of Radclives ?
Mind you . . . the ol eyesight isnt what it used to be

Think your eyesights OK mate, I recon your spot on with both.
In the pic of Dover, the red and blue Fiat / Iveco with red tilt was one of
Transport Services of Southampton ( formerly Jim Squibb & son )
I drove for them at the time of pic…could well have been me.
What good picture of Dover. The blue ERF on the front left hand row is Lowe of Padock Wood.
Is that a Atki’ Borderer Sleeper (light blue) with a fridge on, middle of pic just to the right?
Sorry gents missed the post asking same question before! What a nice shot tho’, apart from the 2 Hungarocamions, not an East Euro’ in site, nowadays its spot the Brit’!
