TRUCKIN IN THE 80's (International)

On one of the earlier pages on this thread there is a photo of a Crusader in Bailey’s colour’s which has obviously been kitted out for the ME I notice it’s a Glasgow reg and I think it may have belonged to Heron Truck Rental who I believe were linked to Millburn Motors the Leyland dealers I remember Crusaders being hired to JOHN McNEIL of Glasgow who did quite a bit of ME work with Volvo 86s then later 88s anyone remember them I have never come across any photos but there must be some about as it seemed quite a big operation they were blue & yellow, so over to the old ME lad’s.
EDDIE.

The Fairfreight DAF reg EOJ 878V, the 2800 I had on Richard Fords was EOJ 868V wish I could find a pic of that!!

It was a long time coming…that ski slope!

Very evocative! I’m coughing from the fumes already. :unamused: :smiling_imp:

I didn’t realise how many firms have packed in until I got on the trucknet, it’s sad how so many can disapear without you noticing, I’m glad it’s not just me that thinks that the trucks of the 80’s were better than today’s then, I thought it might have been nostalga and rose tinted glasses, I’m not sure if these new trucks could be trusted to do some of the work th 80’s trucks used to do without some computer gismo packing up or o load of plastic fitings falling off on the road.

This is presumably the Viaduc Des Egratz - the A40 / E25 flyover that climbs up over Passy and St Gervais on the long climb to Chamonix and the entrance to the French side of the Mt Blanc Tunnel? I believe that prior to this the ‘down’ road, the one that hugs the mountainside, was two way and used by the upward bound traffic also■■?

Yes you are quite right, elbows in all the way up, a few tilts got ripped on the way up too, it was even worse at turn out time from the Monkey House. That load of selly old chimneys you you see is the Steel Works at Courmayeur.

Sorry!! Those chimneys apart from being selly, were Smelly.

One day I came across a Brit (unknown) unit with a BRS fridge rental trailer, he had lost his brakes and picked up a bit of speed. He then started rubbing the wall with his truck and trailer to slow…result, aluminium and peaches torn and smeared against the wall. Good job it wasn’t in the days of traffic coming up.

What was the name of the Routiers nr Chamonix.Reason i ask is because
i once didnt bother fuelling up there because i knew that i had enough derv to do the drops in Italy and make it back there and fuel up on the return using the AS24 card. Trouble was ,2 days later it had turned into a Shell ,wouldnt accept fuel card and i made it Bonnville on fumes, must of coasted most of the way

Don’t know about that but do you remember the Elf garage just before the police post? Once tried to get some money on the DKV there for a fine at the post but the bloke wouldn’t give it me. Eventually he said ring your boss and if he says it’s ok I’ll give you the money. So I rang my mate in Nottingham, told him to say ‘oui’ to everything and put the bloke on the phone. I soon had my money. :unamused:
