Hi all im new to this site, But one question that has always bugged me is why did so many uk trucks doing continental work not have full mudgaurds over the driven axle(I know this seems like a random question but its always bugged me) Was it a trend thing?

It’s to make it easier to fit snow chains which you are more likely to need in Europe or further out.

Well JonB
Not having full mudguards made it possible to put your snow chains on without having to unbolt or tear off those stupid full mudguards.
Whether or not that was the correct reason I couldnt tell you, but anyone who did continental work will agree i’m sure.
Regards and welcome to TN

Wow ive waited 25 years for that answer lol

I used to travel all over the uk with my grandad(He worked for I J Blakey of Hull)
And to me the continental lads where like Gods

Whenever my grandad came home and told me he was getting a new motor my first questions where always

1 will it have split mudgaurds
2 will it have TIR on the front
3 will it have 2 bunks

JonB
Some of us didn’t even bother with drive or bogey axle mudguards, they took up valuable space!! Where long range deisel tanks could be built bigger and closer to the drive axle tyres.

Haven’t got many more pics, glenman, only ones on website. In 70’s never thought there would be anything like this - trucknet etc.
Haven’t been doing as many loads these days because of rise in fuel.

Ian Taylor and gsoverland are right, JonB1973. Going to Italy in winter they wouldn’t let you over Mont Blanc without chains. Snow come on quick and you’d end up blocking road. If you didn’t have chains you could rent them either side for mountain use.

A couple of examples of being “chained up”.

=“dreva”]can anyone fill me in on what happened to dow?
[/quote]
dow was folded about 21 years ago .the photos on here of them all parked together was at trafford park when we took them up for auction myself and another driver took the last 2 up

Oldtimer Trucker:
M.A.N. - DOW Freight Services Ltd.

Salut, Oldtimer Trucker.

The driver of this truck was at a swindon depot, Colin Winslow. He worked for dow’s for about 7 years, after leaving radclive transport at Faringdon.

WHEEL NUT Thought u’d still be here, waiting for your DOW piccys

found these for you .

truckerash, once again you have scored a bulls eye. Dow Freight Scania ANC 133T was driven I think by Tony Gibbons a.k.a. Big T,(ex Law Arabian,Roy Bradford.) Although I dont think that is his missus in the cab,I dont remember who drove it before him, it might of been Bill Bentley. The Transcontinetal is being driven by Brian Tonge ( or was it Brian Cobb ) a.k.a. Petal, ex Chet Trux Driver. Ash I think its about time that they made a blue oval plaque with your name on it and hung it on the stairs at Dover Customs, or at Carisio,if there still there. Thanks for all the amazing photos, Regards Steve.

The scania ANC 133T in this photograph was at swindon depot as you can see if you look closey on the door. The driver at the time was Micky Dunstan (AKA Metal Micky) .
The passenger was Roger Maull. Both drivers worked for radclives transport Faringdon as did most of the original Swindon drivers. Big T died a few years ago, i did many trips with him.
One in particular to Turkey with Derek Robbo and myself Sean Morbey he will be sadly missed, as will the other drivers from dows who have sadly passed away.
