…but what’s with ‘Simister Island’ that traffic Doris’s rattle on about? Northern dirt track stuff perhaps?
Many a true word is spoken in jest Happy Keith as in the early seventies the suspension on my left hand drive 1968 V.W. Varient estate car went kaput on the dirt section of Simister Lane and my pride and joy was never mobile again
. Simister Island is or was the junction of The M 62 and The M 60

HI Chris, it must be a nightmare if you ever meet two stuttering Dronfield men, Dah den dee dee dah dah dah dah dee dah ow a tha . You could just imagine the cypher bods at Fylingdales declaring a high alert status until they had worked that one out.
Hi Bullit, I remember your wife’s Uncle Stanley once telling me about when he had loaded near Sheffield one very hot summers day. It had taken more than a couple of hours to handball the load on and as Stan said he was sweating like a pig. The young lad from the factory who was helping him asked " ave ya got a laver, favver " ?.
I am sure that Chris knew what he meant .
Can’t anybody remember The Compass Roundabout on the A 27 near Portsmouth in the sixties or did I imagine it .

Some parts of the country have a name for every round-about with a name plate on each one. I’ve always thought that’s most useful.
Here’s one that always intrigues me, more a local name than a truckers name though:
Barnoldswick (home of Silent Night mattresses not so far from Burnley) gets called Barlek or Barlick.
Delivering to farms is the worst.
Most Farmers expect you to have the same local knowledge as them, and it’s not just the ;
Turn left at the dog and gun, past Jack’s old place, and just round the corner from standing meadows

Is that the one we used to call towers ?
How about the hole in the wall or the woodshed for anybody who used to go up the old A74 before it was upgraded to motorway? There was a motorway documentary a few years ago & one of them was about building the M62 by scammonden (excuse spelling) dam, and interviewed the daughter of the farmer who owned the little house on the prairie, the motorway split because the land was far too boggy in the middle, as said the farm was saved.
