Trucker killed on A14

Just seen todays paper said that a trucker was killed on A14 yesterday when a tyre exploded in his face, air ambulance on site but died at scene  Anyone know about this tragic accident? Sympathys to his family

Heres the story.

Condolences to his family :frowning:

A HORRIFIC tyre explosion left a trucker dead as he checked his vehicle at the side of the A14.

The driver of the Daf truck, believed to be in his 50s, died as a result of a massive blast from one of his tyres today which left him with serious injuries.

It is thought the explosion may have had a similar impact to a bomb going off.

When paramedics arrived on the scene, on the Bury St Edmunds-bound carriageway at Haughley, near Stowmarket, the man was already unconscious and badly hurt due to the force of the explosion, which happened at about 12.25pm.

The road was completely closed to allow the air ambulance to land, but despite the best efforts of medics, he could not be revived.

Suffolk police have not yet named the dead man. A spokeswoman said his death was not being treated as suspicious and details had been passed to the coroner.

Motoring organisation The AA said it was very rare for tyres to explode, but warned all drivers that checking the pressure of their wheels was vitally important.

A spokeswoman said: “The main reason for a tyre exploding is either massive over inflation, and I mean when it is extremely over inflated, not just a bit. Or a under inflation, because then the tyres can get too hot.

“But it is very very rare.

“These things happen in workshops where the tyres are behind barriers and there is a lot of protection, but it is the first time I have heard of it in ages on the roads.

“The important thing is to always check the pressure of the tyres. Do it once a fortnight at home, before you’ve gone anywhere.”

Condolences to his family.

I always thought the most common reason for this sort of thing happening was damage to the tyre, running on remoulds (cheap tyres) or a manufactoring fault.

I’ve had 2 remoulds explode on me whilst driving when fully loaded and put that down to having crap tyres fitted - it never happened when running with new tyres.

Consolendences to the family and friends,

Sorry if not daliy then weekly at least, on the market
is a system which activates a cover on the tyres valve which
will show the driver that the tyre pressure is incorrect,Also
the new tractor units can have a system fitted which checks the
tyres air pressure when fitted in some cases it will also increase
or decrease the pressure depending on which system is fitted;
Unfortunatly not all operators can afford such systems then it
rests with the driver to check the pressures on the tyres,
dayily checks will help reduce the such incidents, but will not stop them,

what a terrible tradgedy :frowning:

I used to drive for a guy who moved steel plate, the trailers never had new tyres, only remoulds or recaps and if they lasted long enough regrooved, it was very common for us to blow a couple of tyres off the trailer, they never went in singles bangs, always two’s, like the boss said - he could buy 4 remoulds for the price of 1 new tyre (then it was Mich ZX or XZA’s, D20 or 11-22.5) and there was so much damage done to them in the steelyard that it just wasn’t worth buying new, when I ran my own motors though I would never put anything on but new whether it was drive axle or trailer and I kept away from steel yards.

Sorry to hear about this guy though, thoughts go out to his family.

what a shame my deepest sympathy goes out to his family and freinds :frowning:

Condolences to the family.

I remember reading somewhere a couple of years back a car drive was fatally injured as he drove past a truck on the hard shoulder and a tyre exploded killing him instantly   :exclamation: :exclamation: .

One day last year early on a Sunday morning a container truck over took me on the M1 he pulled back in front and a literally a split second later one of his rear (I think) tyres blew, I couldn’t see anything for the white smoke enclosed around my windscreen. Slammed on the brakes, put hazards on as didnt know were he was :exclamation: :open_mouth: , Luckily smoked cleared and he had limped onto the chevron area of the slip road while he still had momentum. I hate to think what could have happened if that had blow while he was over taking me. Or if he had come to sudden stop while I was blinded by the smoke :exclamation: :exclamation: :frowning: :open_mouth:

I saw this, or at least the aftermath and the point where the poor bloke died. I was just a couple of hundred yards from the front of the queue when the road was closed for the ambulance to fly in. They tried for half an hour to save him but to no avail. In fact the only criticism I would have is that they didn’t cover the poor lad up properly before opening the eastbound side where I was - to glance across, as we all inevitably do no matter how hard we try not to, and see him lying there with only his face and part of his torso covered was a heartstopping moment, especially knowing he had been alive only half an hour before. We all knew when he’d gone, as the paramedics stood back and all the onlookers got back in their cars. More than a few tears were shed on that small section of road, mine included.

My thoughts are with his family. I know I rang 'round mine over the course of the next hour.

my thoughts go to his family and friends at this sad time , such a tragedy.

thoughts go to his family. :frowning:

my brother works for ATS and he was on a job at the side of the motorway replacing a truck tyre that had blown but they use the nozzles that clip onto the valve so they don’t have to stand next to it and he was pumping up this new tyre and huge explosion as the tyre exploded and it blew a whole in the side of van, shows what type of damage these things can do.

Condolences to all concerned. There was a similar incident in Suffolk last year when a tyrefitter was killed when a tyre casing exploded. I think our resident JayesEastAnglia made some worthwhile comments.

Another sad day for a truckers family

we go to do are job and no not what will happen, :frowning:

its sad to say that sad things happen my deepest condolences to the family :frowning:

keep on trucking up there mate rest in peace

I got a message from my mate earlier telling me about this, he’d spoken to one of the other drivers in our quarry and they told him that the guy had pulled over because he had a brick or piece of brick wedged between one of his back set of tyres.

It would appear he tried to get it out but the tyre let go…with severe consequences.

My deepest condolences go out to the driver and his family at this sad time.

A truely awful thing to of happened, non of us now the danger we may face just climbing down the steps of our own cabs. My deepest sympathies to his family.

I had the misfortune of recovering the truck yesterday. Got it back to our place for examination. I daren’t say too much because i don’t know how much people are meant to know. I just wish his family well and send my condolence’s. :frowning:

Deepest sympathy to his family. As lucy says though it’s a shame they never covered him up properly i was on the west bound and went past just as the private ambulance arrived. But he was still lying there for all to see this was somtime after the air ambulance had gone. Very bad of them thought.

My deepest condolences go out to all concerned :frowning:

Maybe we can all learn something from this most unfortunate event :bulb:

Such a tragic shame. Just goes to show the dangers of our job that we all think could never happen to us. Yet another driver gone to the motorway in the sky. I salute you sir. :frowning:

Such a shame, another driver working to support his family killed just doing his job. R.I.P
