Glad no one was hurt!

I saw that this morning, the bus and truck where still embedded in the buildings.

Yeah, saw this myself, I’m actually from Glossop but now live a few miles away in Ashton Under Lyne, it’s very lucky nobody was hurt with where it happened.

I was delivering to Firth Rixion, it was the talk of their yard

Just had to look that place up, never heard of it and didn’t even know there was industrial places up there - and I’ve had many a night in The Bullshead just up the road (top of Manor Park Road) and even drove for bus companies in Glossop.

Maybe it’s time I opened my eyes whilst driving :grimacing:

Its a bit of a tight place to get to for a big company too, first time I went there I thought I had ballsed up big style on the lane leading to it

I have it on good authority what happened! Won’t go into details but with a bit of luck it may be the wake up call the recovery industry needs! My contact would only say that VOSA will be all over every recovery operator after this!

What happened then ?

Tell all… the intrigue is killing me…

He didn’t say a lot then, your good authority!?! :unamused:

heres another report saying brake failure

glossopgazette.co.uk/latest- … ria-street

Good & very lucky nobody hurt.

Would love to know the investigation outcome of this. How often does the foot brake valve fail? Very rarely. Other faults would usually cause air loss = brakes come on. Do we still have any experienced fitters on here?
What was that member called who does recovery on the A66?

Why has the bus become detached?

Even if the bus brakes had not been connected up surely that wrecker would hold it back in a straight line on a relatively minor hill?

Have the bus brakes been over braking and pulled it off the wrecker? How would that explain failure of the wreckers brakes?

With ship or air accident investigations the outcomes are in the public domain, but never so with road accidents.

Some interesting points driverone. The newspaper reports there was a passenger involved. It’s quite possible he distracted the driver during the hitching procedure and something was missed. The bus still looks slightly raised in the picture like the axle clamps are still there so maybe they came off the boom if it’s on a slider.
As for the eyewitness reports of the brakes ‘sparking’ I find it hard to believe as with most trucks you can’t see the brakes.
Sadly, as you say, we’ll probably never find out any more.

It is possible to have no air to the foot brake and the brakes do not come on. I had to do some work for Surrey Police after a fatal that the driver claimed brake failure on a wagon and drag.
This is what I did to show it is possible to drive with " no air "

1- Built up air to max - chock the wheels and release the handbrake.

2- Remove all the pipes to and from the foot brake valve which obviously drains all the air for the front and rear service brake circuits.

3- Removed chocks and drove off - Stopped by applying the handbrake which after the first application wouldn’t release again.

This only works if the handbrake is in the released position first.

Made the Police think again :bulb:

Steve

The sparks thing makes me wonder if the underlift failed and somehow the whole thing ended up sliding along like a sled.

The bus became detatched when the wrecker mounted the pavement and the boom hit the deck. The sudden loading would probably snap the safety chains and off it goes! Brake failure is believed to be the cause. I don’t buy the foot valve failure either! More like he cooked the brakes rushing for the next job!

Oh, and the bus would not be braking via the wrecker. Only plumb in to the service brakes with artics, and then only the trailer.

Why not? I’ve seen buses plumbed into the air system when being recovered.

It’ll just be to fill the system with air to get the spring parking brakes off.
