Tricky vehicle to reverse

We had a couple of those on Yardleys (not perfume  ) no power steer and one of them was a heavy barsteward. We woz drivers in those days… tin hat on now

I, like many, had arms like Charles Atlas driving one of them for three years but the Seddon 32/4 I had before was even heavier on the steering.

They were the days… aiming a Foden eight legger at a corner and hoping everyone got out of the way.

There was a few of the showmen that came to Sanquhar used to get welding jobs etc. done at the haulage firm I worked for and I remember one had a 150 Gardner gen set one of the liners had packed up so he just pulled the piston and con rod out and she worked away as a 5cyl. That was the early 70s I spoke to his son about it 3yrs ago and he said oh it worked away fine up to about 3yrs previous to then. Eddie.

For those who are wondering how it worked: The old school Showmen are very imaginative engineers. A piece of leather belt would be cut off, wrapped carefully round the crankpin to block off the oilway and secured with a couple of jubilee clips. Then the the fuel pump lever for the relevant cylinder would be latched back to cut off the fuel.
