Often used for different vehicle sizes/heights.
I’ve had it on occasion where you get the “all wide loads stop and phone” signage. Usually you get a recording telling you which one to follow for your size. Bizarrely, a couple of them have sent me through weight restrictions (of the NIMBY imposed type) when bypasses have had roadworks on them

In Belgium you follow a particular letter on a yellow sign. The E40 was quite confusing a few years ago, it said follow JKLM for Antwerp

recently we had two diversions set up
one set of signs had a black square on

That’s the way it is supposed to work - but there are actually eight - the three you mentioned plus diamond, then (for traffic travelling in the opposite direction) the same four shapes but in outline only. So if you are following the “solid triangle” route but come to a roundabout and start following the “outline triangle” instead it will bring you back to where you started.
