if the company moans about it just remove the valve core and let the tyre down refit the core and say you got a puncture and the tyre is on the limit of wear…cant move the trailer then can you…
dowahdiddyman:
Says a lot about the state of our industry really this topic, why do companies insist on runnig tyres to the legal limit or below, its your licence not their
s. Our mob likeem right down but fortunately nobody is in the office until 8am so it
s off with the abs down onto the estate andoh dear tyres flat spotted boss
.
In our firm it is down lazy drivers not bothering to defect them.
I have had five changed in the last month and seen a couple of others that were near the limit. I have never been told to take a vehicle with tyres I wasn’t happy with.

If the tyres are dodgy then get em changed.
lad ot our place is in Hire van ( more economical for east coast), got pulled (not sure if plod or Vosa) and got 3 points for 1 tyre and prohibition for another, Both tyres have at least 2 mm, our firm is fighting the prohibition but not for the drivers 3 points.
A van is not a HGV, different law, needs to have a minimum of 2mm all round, 2mm is the absolute legal minimum on cars and vans.
Also recut (regroove) is not allowed on Vans or cars.
if your tyres are 2 mm you have a hard job to prove they are not 1.9 mm on some points
I know the min is 1.6 across central 3/4 of tread for cars/vans, 1mm across 3/4 for hgv’s , I was trying to point out that VOSA (as it was nr Wetherby) did him anyway for 2mm■■? Latest news is prohibition will not be overturned apparently!

Take it to the wire baby!!! Thats what our euro freinds do!![]()
what a waste…theres still plenty of tyre left on the wire…i wait for it to explode
Alan…:
Had a tyre on a trailer that looked a bit on the limit. Got my guage out and it was 1mm. I refused to take it as if the limit is 1mm surely its time to change it. one good screw round or even the 90 degree turn to get out of the yard would be enough to give me grief. How many K’s do you get for 1mm.
1mm is the safety limit or the absolute minimum and they should be changed. A vehicle on 28-day inspection should give sufficient warning of when the tyres will need changing based on mileage and loads.
If your company is sweating its assets this much, I would seriously question its maintenance practices.
If you dont like it dont take it remember you get the points.
plenty of tread left on this tyre
Vosa,s position about tyres is as usual confusing to say the least. A friend of mine presented
a vehicle for test with 4mm of tread on the tyres the vehicle passed but he was given “an advisor”
about the tyres which goes on his record !! Does that make sense?

Depends what the advisory was for, I would imagine without the facts that it would be for something like a cut or another feature and nothing to do with overall tread depth. I am not aware that advisories contribute to ‘S’ markings, but I could be wrong.
