New rules announced for London HGVs

Transport for London has announced new regulations aimed at protecting cyclists and pedestrians for HGVs.

From September 1st, all lorries on the capital’s non-motorway roads must be fitted with side guards (to stop cyclists for being dragged under the wheel) and class V and VI mirrors to improve visibility.

The plan was announced at the second London Road Safety Conference on February 5th. In consultations, over 90 per cent of respondents approved of the proposals.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “Improving the safety of London’s roads is a top priority. We know that a large number of cyclist deaths and serious injuries involve a relatively small number of trucks and lorries that are not fitted with basic safety equipment. Such vehicles are not welcome in the capital.”
Of the 14 cyclist deaths in London in 2013, nine involved HGVs. TfL aim to reduce road deaths in the capital by 40 per cent before 2020.

TF I don’t go to that ■■■■ hole …wont even go in a car

that’s would be a great answer I hate London so if everyone says ■■■■ off we aint doing it or delivering until you get stupid bikes in bike lanes or off the roads totally then see how long bumbling boris lasts.

But out of the 9 fatals involving HGV’s, how many of them already had this equipmemt fitted? Most of the stuff running round the capital is fairly new because of the LEZ so they already have the mirrors in place. This just seems aimed purely at tippers and underrun bars.

I wanna know how they fit side guards on a bus :open_mouth:

Sadly it’s quicker and easier to legislate an object than it is to educate stupid.

Where the problem with that lies is the attitude of the big logistics companies. They subscribe to all this responsibility carry-on and are quite happy to spend money buying kit for their trucks which at least helps mitigate the abject stupidity and gung-ho attitude of a large chunk of London’s cyclist population. It makes them look caring and committed to safety, see, and that’s what matters the most.

Probably all of them. theres no reason to end up under the wheels unless you were sat on the inside of a truck making a turn. cyclist can see the truck, truck cant see the cyclist so why put yourself there in the first place. Its like walking up and kicking a land mine you know whats going to happen.

^ I agree Nick, that would work brilliantly

Don’t blame the cyclists blame the parants, when I was a young boy my mother told me never to play on my bike near traffic.

No side guards are going to stop a cyclist being dragged under the wheels, as most if not all the incidents are when the truck is turning then the cyclist will still end up under the rear wheels, side guards or not.

Of the 14 cyclist deaths in 2013, 9 involved trucks. So the other 5 deaths obviously involved other types of vehicles. What modifications will have to be made to them to allow them access to London■■? Nothing probably. Hauliers left having to pick up the cost of protecting muppet cyclists again.

Of the 14 cyclist deaths in 2013, 9 involved trucks. So the other 6 deaths

What school did you go to? Lol

Which is an attitude I strongly disagree with. When I go out riding with my kids we use the roads and not the pavements. I have a trailgator for my 3 year old and take him in the road too. I’d much rather show them the dangers and how to deal with traffic then encourage them to use pavements and turn into one of the clueless adults you see riding round the capital who dont know how to interact with other traffic at close quarters.
