Hi gaz,

Here is a pic of it when it was brand new, with it’s owner Tim Perrit-Jones on it’s weekly run for Trans Alpine /Europa,used to leave Erith on a Friday night, weekend at Paladini’s Carisio, then clear & tip Milan area/Bassano on a Monday same run every week. It was only a 4 wheeler then, left hand drive, with a big ■■■■■■■

Next owner was Phil Grant owner driver in Poole, Pat (Ainacs) on the Long departed Southampton thread has posted some pics of it.

Hope this helps
Regards
Richard

look on face book astrans middle east a pic on there of it

I used to drive it around 91/92 for Russel Emptage doing Greece overland. I next saw it in Moscow in 96 with Dogmandoo driving/owning it, it had strangely changed to RHD though.

It went well enough & always sat up well too it had a 350 big cam in it iirc, it was a lwb one & had a tag fitted, it should have stayed a 4x2 imho, it was as tall as a Magnum with the axle raised.

The last trip I did in it I ended up fetching a journolist back from Belgrade with me, he took loads of pictures of it for an article about blokes working in war zones.

thanks guy’s for all the info, would have been in my element if i drove this :grimacing: :grimacing:

also many many thanks to freddie

Tetragaz he was a freelance journo, he went to Yugo in a Rick Ellis lorry driven by Wayne Skinner, his previous trip was to Mogadishu I think He said.

i thought it has had a new reno cab because there’s no sleeper windows, unless they did do some transcons without em.

As far as i know later ones you could have without windows, Renaults had a sunroof where as transcon didnt.

Iirc the later ones where assembled at Sandbach & had no windows, the two I owned had both had the windows removed & plated out & new interior panels, VKN 45X had windows I recall as I painted them inside & it looked much better, the new cab was I would guess ex Birds Eye foods they had a fleet of them on A plates I remember.

Didn’t Birdseye not by the last 100 or so to break for spares.
Diesel Dave in Greenwich had all the Birdseye ones. Remember going in there as a kid with my dad to buy spares to keep various heaps on the road and they was all lined up in there in the late 80s

Im sure some Big Henry officianado will let us know kr79, I dont know, they looked well though going down the road, I ber Birds Eye got them for a song. I remember John Debruin having an ex Brinks Mat one too, an interesting thing with bullet proof glass…

The Sandbach built ones did have windows too, mine did and it was built there, the way to distinguish a Dutch built and Sandbach built one were the roof corner marker lights, the Dutch ones didn’t have them…

The last Birds Eye ones were on a B plate IIRC

Ours was ex Birds Eye and was B495VGS

This is VKN 45X in the early nineties near Milan waiting to load for Lautrans TIR to Greece, thats Yvonne Snooks sat in it, Kenny Snooks (RIP) was driving it then, I was driving the 89 parked next to it. The last regular driver of it was Mickey Bashford who drove it for Dennis The Rat, that was untill its new lease of life in RHD form courtesy of Mr Dogmandoo who travelled to some very odd places in it…

Some had windows, some didn’t & some had marker lights, some didn’t.
