paul
I was meditating over how far we’d come and how much further we’d got to go.
I was lucky enough to finish my meal without the belly dancer sitting on my lap.
I paid the huge sum of 20 Turkish lira for that pic!
If you have any problem posting pics, give me a shout.
Could have been the same night Ian, I’ve got the pics of the belly dancer here I’'ve managed to get pics onto PC so will try and put them on site tomorrow, you might recognise some, don’t know. That waswhen 20 lira was worth something, what was it 33 to the pound.
PROWLANDS:
Derek Thommo Thomson another name to conjure with, never went abroad not enough fiddles !!!
That older fitter rings a bell, forget his name but got a feeling he might have been Page haulage fitter who were inthe yard before Bob,
Known Fergie for 30 years, stranger than fiction, but Ok wife Connie really nice llady. the Buzz you know of at Tolemans was most probably Busby or Paul Legget who now drives for a firm up at Ransomes Europark, white trucks, blue writing, there was most probably a guy name of John Fleming at TUK also, used to be called Joe 90.

Great pics there Paul, sure brings some memories back!
Hi KW,
This whole site has stirred up a few memories that had slipped off the back end of my brain. The Star of David I wore because being a Welshman by birth, St. David is the patron saint of Wales, bit of a pure excuse I know but I liked the emblem anyway. I always took it off going into any Arabic countries, but there was one occasion in Tehran whilst waiting for customs clearance, me and Smudge were at the swimming pool at the compound where we all waited, usually for a few days whilst our trailers were cleared for onward delivery, and a lady and gentleman started talking to me in what I assumed was Pharsee and pointing to the Star of David. Eventually they realized I did’nt understand, and said they were Jewish and whereabouts in Israel my family originated from. As soon as I told them I was’nt Israeli they hit the roof and the woman lost it totally, shouting at me and telling me I had no right to be wearing this, and it was a slur on Zionism etc when non believers wore this just as a piece of jewellery, and did’nt I realize the iconic significance of this object. She even tried to reach for it. Eventually the ruckus died down and they waves me away in disdain as only middle eastern people can. It certainly taught me how some people attach a deep religeous meaning to what we may regard as something of little importance. To me I was just wearing a piece of attractive jewellery, which I have now passed on to one of my sons, so he can deal with any consequences in future.
Interestingly enough a lot of the lads bought gold artifacts in the M/E because it was cheap by European standards. I even had a gold bracelet made up in Istanbul in the bazaar at Danny’s which cost me £136 in '76, a few years ago I gave it to my son Lewis for his 21st and got it valued for him value £2000 !!!
r slater,
Yes they did have 1 or possibly 2, Bob had bought a few M/D 232 day cabs and they were not considered man enough really long haul, so he did purchase a second hand Maggie 310 Pullman in 1976 which he gave to Smudge to drive which quite pleased him as until then he had been driving a MAN 232 sleeper which like the Maggie232’s would’nt pull your girlfriend off Brad Pitt. The Maggie 310 was a good sized cab but in fact was’nt that much more powerful than the Fiat 619’s we were driving, rated at 240bhp but very torquey. Interestingly the non turbo trucks like the Fiat were more efficient than turbo engines the higher up in the mountains you were.
Hi Ian,
They do don’t they, it’s quite surreal how a site like this recharges the memory banks, and for that I am very grateful, that time of my life was a wonderful time and those experiences havve stood me in good stead over the years.
PS do you still look like that at 60, because I do…not.

Excellent Ian,
And not a zimmer in sight !! you would’nt believe nearly 35 years had passed since that photo in the Mocamp. You look fit and healthy old chap. Was that a re-union you were at, and its nice to see the old leather jacket still fits !! Can’t say the same about my old clothes, mind you I can walk, don’t like to but can. You mentioned another string, I’m a bit of a novice at this stuff, could you let me know which string it is, would like to have a look. will see if can put recent pic on.
