Anyone remember this point …on the road to Riyadh after topping Taif the pile of stuff beyond the red car was motorbikes confiscated from who knows who !!!
thought I would add this due to the subject of bikes !!!.. this was (1977) from the air conditioned comfort of a SARAMAT F89…

No is the answer to that ? I must to have sand in my eyes Backsplice ? It looks like a new road and the curb stones stand out with street lights are you sure it’s not an oasis !!! Har Har , I was out under a blazing sun with a dead horse for three days on that road , sleeping upright with a Philo named Matt no AC and little food , water was on ration, looking out at night in the cab watching the Christmas trees sail by until I fell asleep , ( PS l wonderd where dhtriyadh got that 750 ? from ■■ ) The new kid on the block certainly knows his stuff it good to have him on board Ron

I know it’s not a Bedouin s tent but the gas bottle fire works great , we can have the family home for Christmas, and we can wave to them from inside our warm house ! Har Har

Merry Christmas and a safe New Year to all near and far Ron

Happy New Year all!

I’ve just found this wonderful French-made film about the road transport scene in Jeddah in about the period you lads were doing it. It runs for 45 minutes and you’ll need to skip a few adverts in the middle. The film is well made and shows Jeddah centre and port and the various roads leading out, including what looks like the Taif mountain road and the road to Mecca. Watch out for the pair of Scammell Crusaders at the truck stop where the driver takes shai and has a breather.

It’s a good film even if you didn’t work there! Here’s the link:

Enjoy. Ro.

شكرا لك لقد استمتعت بذلك
shukraan lak laqad aistamtaeat bdhlk… I,ll bet Ronhawk will too !!! just a year or so after my stint but very familiar even after all this time … did you pick up on the tonka with a TIR plate ■■?

Well found Ro it’s good to see it motion , the old town looks clean ,and a new fleet of bulk tankers with fresh drivers ,the police are smartly dressed In fact it’s almost respectable to the untrained eye ,I remember the sleep easy tresels at the truck stops , the Mercs where everywhere ,the block of flats in town ! The tri Star we flew in on ,flying between these to land at Jeddah air port you could clearly see through the windows as we we where at the same height ,I wish you could experience the heat of this place together with the sweet Fragrent smells ,and of course the cockroaches and Rucker dust ether side of whatever road where the Tonka s gathered up for the night , it certainly takes us back . Thanks again to Ro , Ron , I will study it again for ( That plate )

Here you are again Ronnie …stopping up the mountain

Well done for capturing those stills Ron! I wonder if the Saudis changed the name ‘Crusader’ on the paperwork of those Scammells! Good job the name was only on a little badge or they’d have had to rearrange the letters like the Brits had to do with the word ‘Ford’ on the front of Transcons (Dorf /Drof / Frod etc). Just a silly thought!

I am glad that someone realise the difficulty in attempting to get that photo !! I had to get that Merc out of the way ? And finally got a near perfect shot Ron

Backsplice looks like you are carrying air in those boxes !!! We would never catch you with 80 ton on the back of an A series , the Mac would have given you a run , ERF NGC ruled OK , ■■■■■■■ of course , Ron

The Tonka with the TIR plate is about 37.50 mins into the show … good was,nt it ■■
