Tramping at its best!

commonrail:
At the end of the day…if your boss asks you to take a load to Cornwall etc…you can’t go?
What sort of lorry driver are you?

Answer…your not

It depends type of job you’ve taken, if you taken a job that you know involves National work then when asked to go somewhere, you can’t really say I can’t go I don’t do nights out. Then what about the drivers who will do UK tramping, but would refuse to go overseas, does that then mean they’re not proper Lorry Drivers?

So if you’ve taken a job that is day work, then I feel you would be justified to kick off if asked to do a night out. I don’t think it makes you less of a Lorry Driver, I’ve known drivers on local agricultural work, who could get a truck into farms that would make most of us think twice, but then they do go there every other day.
Or the driver I saw in central London a couple of years ago, when I first saw him start to manoeuvre I wondered what he was up to until I saw him swing a truck into a gap between 2 buildings, he obviously does it most days and knows he has to move fast as the gap he makes in the traffic would be filled in seconds if he doesn’t, it was bloody impressive to watch, once I realised what was going on.

You’re probably right

AndrewG:
The ones that are actually home every night must do very mundane same old runs day in day out and most likely panic when they get held up somewhere

Guilty!

dozy:
ive parked all over but I can’t think of one that commes anywhere near parking on my drive and spending the night in my house , I think it’s really sad that drivers would rather stop in a truck than spend time with the Mrs / kids , I do it but hate it , my only thoughts are friday and going to my family / house
Though I’m not suprised , the amount of our drivers that are doing a extra shift for £50/£75 :unamused: , sad , you’re family should be more important than a few quid .

If you hate it, ■■■■ off and do something else.

I think it’s really sad that you go to work and your only thoughts are going home. Its also sad that because the day begins with an F you desperately need to be home.

Yeh that was me on both occasions. :sunglasses:

Flexibility has nothing to do with ability, more to do with attitude.
They aint going to turn into a pumpkin or roll off the edge of the world if they find them selves stuck out due to unforseens.
These guys amuse me when they come with the ‘‘I aint carrying any food or kit for unforseen nights out, I refuse,… I’m a day man me’’ :unamused:

Well ■■■■ freeze to death and starve when you are stuck in the worst snow storm for years for a couple of days… that was totally unexpected. :bulb:
Dramatic example yeh, but you get my point.

Tramping is a mindset that day drivers will never get!! Much like Morris dancing.

I used to tramp, did it for 20+ years here and over the water. I’m a day man now and very happy with my lot.

You just don’t know when the ■■■■ to shut up do you?

Chunkzilla:
0830 start - 1700 finish and Toby carvery and a pint of doom bar to wash it down.
It’s not all doom and gloom y’know!

Good on you mate. I do a couple of nights out a week, I can’t deliver after 4pm so most nights I’m parked up by 5pm! Feet up, book open, chilled :sunglasses: Quite rare I start before 6am too.

Most chilled job I’ve had. Get given a run, it gets done when it’s done, no chasing. Don’t get me wrong I could earn more but it’d be push push push. As you say, not all doom & gloom!

And you have never tramped a day in your life and that’s a fact!

Well week just past there got planned for 2X 5hr shifts over my 5shift week so as on salary was a nice wee hourly rate when I worked it out that way.[emoji869][emoji41]
No reduced rests last week either!!!

Yes do my fair share of 15spreads but 95% will involve a boat journey so 2/4hrs of the spread involves reg Zzzzzzzzzzzzz!!![emoji848][emoji847]

Living in NI if you wanna earn decent dough you gotta do the “trips” or tramp.[emoji106]

I went to the chippy last night and got cod, chips & curry sauce twice, for me and the Mrs. The bloke in front of me ordered pie & chips, so I came home and went on a chipshop forum and slated him for not liking the same thing as me! Seriously though, I’m a tramper and love it, I have bad days occasionally, same as any job, but as long as the good times outweigh the bad i’ll keep doing it. I don’t sleep in a tin box, I sleep in my second home ( first home more like  ). As others have said, proper bedding and kettle, cooker and food supplies make a real difference. I have no interest in being a day driver but I’m glad that there are plenty of you out there that do, cos that means I don’t have to. But I would never knock anyone for doing it. It would be a bit boring if we were all the same, all working for the same company, driving the same lorry, living in the same street, in the same house and driving the same car. That’s me done, have a great Sunday drive’s, weather working or not. I’m off for a ride on me bike, cos I don’t see enough tarmac Monday to Friday !!

Like I said many times before, you tried it for a few days, it didn’t suit you, that’s fine, we’re all different and you found a job that suited you, that’s great, but those shift wouldn’t work for everybody, mate of mine had a shift like that, good money, but his wife was on a similar work pattern and they hardly saw each other.
I don’t have kids, so no problem missing them grow up, I like being away, I like being on the move, going to new places, day work limits that so it doesn’t suit me, when I was tramping and even with the work I do these days, I worked with and still work with some good mates and get nights out all over Europe with them and most trampers get home at weekends, I’m quite chilled lying on my bunk when I am in a truck, and also never had problems getting showers and most people don’t shower at work so they can’t have a shower when they want.

And there are many jobs where people don’t see much their children grow up, I remember talking to the wife of a friend of mine, he was a Traffic Cop and coming up to retirement, she was saying she was looking forward to it, she told me he’d missed so much of their children growing up, because of the shifts he’d worked in the Police, because he’d be involved in something and couldn’t knock off when he was supposed to.
And then there are builders who work away for long periods, spent loads of time lodging in a Pub in East Sussex that was used by loads of Builders who used to come from all over the Country to work on jobs in the South East. Then there are loads of people who get home everyday, but leave before the children are up and get home after they’ve gone to bed, the probably see as much of their children as Trampers do.

I did 4 on 4 off , 2 day shifts 2 night shifts … was regular … yeah times were when you were caught on a job … but, always got home … for you no kids that’s ok,… but, I prefer my bed my mates etc … not being an unpaid security bloke in a tin box, being exploited by an employer … as the other guy said thinking an 8 hour shift is a touch when all you do is go to a pub or sit in a tin box … and rock to sleep in a lay by when the gaffer is too tight to pay for secure parking with basic toiletry needs… I shower everyday because I like to be clean… I agree, some people, in all walks of life would probably have an anexity attack at the sight of a shower, maybe break out in a sweat having to drink a glass of water.

Yep attitude has far more to do with it than the type of work.
I’m sure there are plenty of Day drivers who’d cope with the odd unplanned night out due to unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, not bad planning though, they probably won’t be as comfortable as a regular tramper as they only have emergency gear, but they’d get on with and wouldn’t fill social media with how badly they’ve been treated.

The one’s that aren’t a little prepared for an unplanned night out and throw their toys out of the pram on here are probably the same type of people who, despite the warnings, get caught out in their car in the worst weather for a generation, and then complain about the authorities not being prepared for bad weather, Oh the irony.

I’ve never been expected to be a security guard and if I was I’d be crap at it, as when I’m asleep nothing wakes me. The only thing people I’ve work have expected is that I park somewhere sensible.
I like to get home, always nice, but I’ve found it doesn’t take long before I’m itching to get away again, we’re all different.
When I have done day jobs with far fewer hours than truck driving, I’ve found that most of my mates, even the ones that aren’t truck drivers rarely go out in the week, at least once most of them settled down.
I don’t work for people who are to tight to pay for proper parking with facilities.
You can get a shower everyday when out, the fact some drivers don’t is their problem, not a problem with the job.

Another thing apart from the ‘‘tin box’’ ■■■■■■■■ that day men keep slavering about is the …not getting a wash/shower thing.
They don’t seem to grasp the difference between a TRAMPER and a TRAMP :unamused: .
My tin box is well equipped with all home comforts (except the female kind) and I shower every day thanks. :sunglasses:

You’ve got the ray mears’ of this world…and then you’ve got the richard madeleys’

I say good luck to the poster…start at 08.30 and finish at 5.pm…thats a great shift…way too many moans on this site about their 15 hour day…truck driving it seems are for the ■■■■■■■…those who ■■■■■ about everything, yet do nothing about it, because they cant, they dont have the qualifications to move on, yet truck driving was the only way to earn a living…but, there are those who chose a differnet career, got their NVQ`s etc, then became truckers because the excitement of travel, and probably better money was their way to move on…each to their own i suppose.
