Tramping and army reserve

Any one on here do it? Away Monday to Friday nor.ally, sometimes back midweek. Before I did my test I was in the middle of an application for the forces as an engineer bit that was massively delayed long story short I waited long enough and got my license and a new job.

But it’s still something I’m interested in so been thinking about the army reserve instead. If any ones got any experience of doing both feel free to chip in.

I do Mon to Fri tramping, and was also in the TA at one time, though it was in what was known as a specialist unit where the commitment was only a 2 week camp plus 2 weekends a year, no weekly drill nights, though you could do more if you wanted to. The downside was that the training was done at a central location so could involve a lot of traveling to get there, though travel costs were paid.

Im in the reserves and away most of the week, as long as you keep your section commander, plt sgt or plt cmdr in the loop of whats going on should be ok, have you done your phase one yet?

Get yourself in the SAS full time and they seem to let loads of em work undercover as lorry drivers.

I’d discuss the idea with your current employer 1st to see how flexible they are

Not sure how it works for when your joining but once your in your covered by the reserve forces act and your work have to release you for training

I can understand the idea of being released for service if you where previously in the service prior to being employed by the haulier as they would take that into consideration at the interview stage, but surely the haulier is gonna be peaved if you sign up to the reserves after commencing with them

Ive not had that problem but before that act came in employers could discriminate against you, best thing is for him to speak to his recruiting team theyd know all the ins and outs of it, but i do know the employers get compensated if you get mobilised not sure how it works for training as i take it as holliday, so get paid double efectivly ££££££££££

I haven’t, I haven’t even started the process yet if I’m being honest. I wasn’t sure if it was something I’d be able to do with being away most of the week but from the replies I’ve got it looks like it could be ill have to have a chat with the careers office and talk to my boss see if there would be any problem but I can’t imagine there would be there a decent company

Cheers for the replies I’ll have a crack with the careers office and my boss and go from there then.

I take it you are single and don’t have any friends?

Not single but don’t have any friends.

Hence why we all became lorry drivers, lack of friends and social life [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]

I was in the reserves at Raf Brize Norton with training starting Friday evening in the class room with lectures and exams.
Saturday was all day classroom and Sunday with practical tests for basic training .
When I was there they were not worried about weekly rest for Lgv drivers, but later on, they were more aware of it .
In theory if I was stopped on a Dvsa multi agency check with the Department of work and pensions checking National Insurance numbers, it would reveal being paid at the weekend for work and it not shown on a manual entry on the tachograph .
By law, the employer must keep your job if you are mobilized for a six month tour of Iraq or Afghanistan and let you go for training .
Traveling expenses are paid to attend training, on some exercises , it may involve not sleeping for a few days, ideally it is recommended to not drive a lorry Monday and Tuesday to rest and get a 45 hour off .

Done both regular and T.A. (as was)
Did all the training and compulsory call up.

Your employer could give you the two weeks off for training and annual camp depending on staff cover etc.
I used to get two weeks paid leave for it on top off my holiday allowence.
However that was a big company a little guy with 5 wagons might not want to pay for an agency man while you run round.
The TAC HQ should be able to furnish your employer with details of how he can claim back some of the costs etc.
It used to be done by an organisation called SABRE not sure who now.

However if you’re a HGV driver a word of caution.
You will be using your weekly rest
The definition of weekly rest is being able to dispose of your free time as you see fit not running round a woods for 48 hours or zooming across Salisbury Plain.
There was a problem a few years ago where lads were bing square wheeled on Monday and Tuesday as they needed to take their 45 hours off.
Even if you reduce you still need 24 hours off after finishing with the Reserve.
Regardless of who it is it is a second job
You’ll pay tax on your earnings also and as no driver on here gets out of bed for less than £50k it could be a lot of tax.

At the end of the day myself and a lot left the Reserve as although it’s great fun your company pays your wage.
Keep them imformed the TA is an offshoot of the Army they won’t give a toss if you can’t pay the mortgage.

OAD- These TA lot are already in the SAS mate.
