I used to do class 2 tramping 5/6 years ago and during the winter months my car could be so iced up from a week of icy nights I had to de-ice the doors just to open them.
Im starting class 1 tramping in January, and was wondering what steps any of you trampers out there take to help with this issue? Are there any tricks you’ve learnt to help with this? Or in fact any other problems you’ve had like flat batteries?
I wish you all safe travels now that the ice is upon us!
throw a set of jump leeds in the boot and if you have rear disc brakes park car in gear chock the wheels and leave handbrake off as pads can freeze onto the disc
tango boy:
john picks me up monday mornings and the missus fridays, no hassel
why does john pick your mrs up on fridays ?
i find when i’m away, leaving the car on 1 of those plug in trickle chargers does the job.
looks abit like a small flat solar panel, plug in the cigarette lighter, leave it on the dash to get light, job done.
think mine was 20 quid, (ish) from amazon.

Never done anything to my car, parked it, got my gear out locked it up. come back to it at the end of the week, unlock it throw gear in, fire it up have a chat while it warms through, go home.
No problem with freeing brakes off, if it was frozen opened the door carefully especially as I tend to buy car with pillerless windows and they glass does bend a bit as you tug the door.
Only once have I came back to a flat battery and that was because it was knackered, also come back after a month away to find the car covered in bird ■■■■ once though, never parked it under the telephone lines again.

Same here. Don’t park under the trees especially if the pressure washer’s frozen
Unfreezing brakes Never had to do that even in the Rockies even when it needed needed digging/dragging out of a drift
Used to ride my BMX to work but work a bit further away now. I just don’t lock my car, so never had a problem with flat battery yet and I’m hard so I just pull my door open when it’s frozen
Bit of Silicone spray on the door rubber seals and the window runners will stop them icing up. If you wanted to be fussy just disconnect the battery if your worried about a flat battery.
I once went in holiday for 2 weeks and left my car parked up on a car park not far from the sea front in Blackpool (used to live there and had a permit). The salty air is worse than any cold weather. Any longer and the brakes would of siezed completely. Even 24 hours parked there and the discs would have rust forming on the surface. Nasty stuff.
Never had any problems with any of my cars so far
Apart from my old Seat Toledo which had a flat battery but a quick trip around the yaed attached to a double drive Volvo FM cured it
