Tramac driving academy

Good morning,

I have been for an interview with Tramac about going on there driver academy, i was told it was a 7 month training time, in that time i will buddy up with a contractor and learn all the aspects of the job.
I was told i will be a relief driver if i pass.
Im just trying to find out how is the driving academy and is Tramac a good place to work, i had all the usual stuff best place to grown and that, but i would like some honest feedback on what the company is really like, dont want to waste my time and find out it isnt a good place to work.

Thanks

Tramac or Tarmac?

Sorry tarmac, auto correct on my mobile

What do they mean by ‘driver academy’ mate?
How much are they charging for the training, and is it really cheaper than a normal training provider?
A ‘potential’ job offer isn’t worth a jot mate, and unless it’s guaranteed (which it won’t be) they have a whole multitude of ways to say no! And I suspect if they were saying yes you can have a start, it won’t be a job you’d want anyway!

Personally I’d prefer to have control over my training schedules and spending my money where I choose, i.e. after a driving assessment or rock solid recommendation… I wouldn’t want to be locked into a pants programme for months having to tow the line and saying yes sir, no sir, especially if I’m paying for the privilege! :open_mouth:

Getting a start once you’ve got a licence isn’t hard, yes it may be not the best work going, but you’ll have your freedom to move on a couple of months later to better things…

Looked on their website are you being trained to drive a concrete mixer?
One thing I thought with the big aggregate companies was they mainly used “Self employed” Franchisee drivers and from reading some threads on here that doesn’t sound like a great route to go down? OP Said they were training with a contractor does that mean a Franchisee for Tarmac?

Or are Tarmac looking to get more direct employed drivers now?

Ill be working for tarmac directly but covering hoildays and sick days for the contact blokes they have thats what they said to me.
Tarmac will be covering the cost for my licence

Do you get a wage of some sort throughout the training?
if readymix/ aggregate work interests you and you can afford to live on whatever money they give you throughout training you’ve probably nothing to lose, is it both class’s or just class 2 they put you through?

Evil does make a good point about putting yourself through training as you can go wherever to try and get work. But I think some companies are training drivers like this now, seen two companies localish to me Knights of old and Mick George that are doing it!, so as they have a ready mixed batch of drivers   who are trained to do the job THEIR way instead of maybe using agency drivers without experience in that area?? I dare say there maybe some government funding involved in it too somewhere that the companies take advantage of?

No idea of the overall wages when fully trained in these roles though

And do you know how long you’ll be tied to them without repayment penalties?
Along with working out your training wage verses free market wage rates?

You need to do your sums and work out whether you’re saving yourself money on a good deal…
Or signing yourself up to a sentence! :open_mouth:

Your not wrong there mate! He seems to be into everything now too dustcarts and does a home and garden range like b&q and Wickes! Unlike Stobarts I’ve heard he pays well but he wants his pound of flesh! Dunno if anyone on here works for him that can give us their views?
