whilst travelling the motorways ive noticed recently that on certain parts on alot of motorways the tram lines in lane 1 are quite deep, very noticeable in a truck if you are pulling in from lane 2 or out of lane 1,i noticed even more in the car on the m56 on sunday on route to southport airshow.the steering wheel really kicked and it scared the hell out of my mrs and kids.why do theses tram lines occur?,its obvious that most hgv run in lane 1 but surely they should increase the depth of ■■■■■■■■ etc to counteract this…maybe i have it wrong and someone more in the know maybe able to put me right.
I think it’s more of a problem with the tarmac. Hot days softening the material and large amounts of HGV traffic concentrated mostly in one lane slowly but surely deforms the layers. I wonder if super single tyres on trailer axles cause more wear, as they don’t spread the weight widely across the track as much as an axle with 4 wheels would.
Not a problem with concrete roads though.
They’ve got far worse since we went to 44 tonnes.

The stretch of the M56 past the refinery is quite bad for it, as is lane 1 of the M6 between Thelwall and the M62. My Astra actually copes quite well with no dramas, but my BMW 3 series is a nightmare and pulls all over the place.

I was there on Saturday, the Vulcan wasn’t flying Sunday so I went Sat. (more pics if you click that 1)
But, back to topic, yes, they’re real bad with a caravan on, especially the 1st day I got mine and hadn’t fitted my anti-snake bar yet (was just bringing it home), I was really on edge all the way, seen what happens when it goes wrong.
A few years ago parts of the new A14 was atrocious, known as rutland alley, do I recall the contractor who laid the road skimped on the ■■■■■■■■?
But my worst ever was the 28km of so called motorway near Poznan, get in those ruts and the truck steered itself, switch on the cruise control, set you alarm clock and go to sleep…

Nice pics of the Tin Triangle, I’ve not seen it since it was restored but I’m sure I’m deaf as a result of watching it whilst it was still flying with the RAF!

and super singles on trailers
The M4 west is quite bad for them.
And The M25 at J26 clockwise, just as you come up to the crawler lane. You try and move into the crawler lane and nothing happens, then all of a sudden you jump out of the tram lines and shoot into the lane and end up half way on the hard shoulder
carnt have concrete now the eco friendlys dont like to much noise polution

This flew low over my house a few weeks ago, wonderful sight. Nice pictures.
About tram lines, i find them bad, particularly around Croydon
Yeras ago I worked as a lab technician for a roadstone company. The rutting usually occurs uphill where the lorries are pulling hard and there is a greater shearing force on the surface. Most uphill motorway lane 1s could be resurfaced with specialised bitumens in the tarmac which would solve the problem. Expensive stuff. Which is why you’re all driving on motorways with tramlines.
Eh, kids. You haven’t seen a real tram lines yet
:
There used to be some places, when you could ground if you drove a car…
Eastern Europe has a standard of 8.5 tons per axle (IFRC) and all the roads were build to this standard. Then in 1989 we were open to the Western European lorries…
They work on it, but as you can guess there is still a lot to be done.
There is even very nice sign for them:
awfull when yer changing lanes although i dont take much notice of them as i’ve not come across really bad ones , however a driver on the fleet has a scania 6X2 but with the small pusher axle & he says because of the narrower trackwidth it has the tramline sare throwing him all over the place , i used to like the tramlines on the M5 from cullompton to exeter especially with my old 8 wheeler , it was like having autosteer , i could roll quite a few ciggies while the lorry took it’s self down to jct 30

I have to agree with you Orys
Yep its all about hot tarmack on sunny days and trucks squishing it.
Pain in the arse on a bike unless you cross them at an angle. Orys’s pictures look like Belgium did several moons ago

My Dad used to fly Vulcans. Just thought I’d mention it.

At least! I knew that this day will come! You admitted, that Poland is actually better at something! Maybe Tram lines is not the best thing to be happy with, but it’s always a start
(this is a joke)
I am joking too
