Hi all,
Can any recommend (or not) any good (or bad) trainers in (or near) the Southampton or Hampshire area.
I’m currently looking at:
By Pass by-pass.co.uk/courses/lgv-training.html
or
Trailer Training stevedavisadi.co.uk/lgv_training.htm
Cheers!
By-pass is on the recommended list. Trailer training say their instructors are DSA reg. Or consider residential.

Or consider residential
Thanks Pete. Would that be a residential course in say: MANSFIELD/PETERBORO LOL (You got there in the end, not that I object…)
So yeah, book me into the MANSFIELD/PETERBORO Hilton and I’m there!!! (Champagne by the pint, caviar burgers & deep fried battered frogs legs please!!! ) - And after a hard day driving/training, a nice relaxing soak in a hottub of lard surrounded by 6 other truckers all in their speedo’s!
(To be clear - Yes I’m having a bit of fun. And I’m sure your residential accommodation is fine, I’m just not sure about the distance)
But in all seriousness: I guess the important factors are: Good vechicles, time behind the wheel, and a trainer that gives a ■■■■. And I do get the feeling you’re all of those. So I wouldn’t rule out a residential course as long as it was intense and not spanned over too many days. I’m aware that this would depend on my abilities, and I won’t say I’m a good driver (as who doesn’t). Just that I’m 43 and get a lot more mileage out of my fuel than most, as I read the road a head and act accordingly. (Well that is when I’m not trying to see if I can get my car on 2 wheels around roundabouts anyway…)
Hi,
I can highly recommend Bypass. I did my class 2 last October and my class 1 with them in December. I passed both first time. ( no minors on the class 2!)
They give very professional one to one tuition and are a very friendly bunch. The price I paid was also very competitive compared with others in the area.
I’ve since been back for both CPC and ADR.
Any other questions just ask but to sum up I was very impressed with them.
Cheers.

Thanks for that Blackrat, a recommendation is worth it’s weight in gold!
What did you do your training/tests in? 18 tonne for class 2? and full size artic for class 1?
Also, how have you found getting work since? And if it’s not too rude to ask, what sort of money are you being offered for work in the Southampton/Hampshire area?
Yeah, class 2 was an 18 tonne Scania and the class 1 was a Volvo FH artic.
At the moment I’m just doing agency work which seems easily available. Pay is £9.50 an hour flat rate and £11.70 after 8 hours or on a Saturday.
Cheers
Thanks for the info Blackrat, very helpful!
Glad your getting work, and the training was a worthwhile investment!
I’ve been worried that as a newbie or inexperienced driver, I wouldn’t be able to get a start to gain experience. And the rates you gave/quoted are higher than I expected as well, meaning that the investment will pay itself back quicker than I anticipated.
Best of luck and hope your enjoying it!

Are you still on agency, blackrat? Mind sharing which one? I’ll be booking with bypass shortly and would like to find an agency for steady Class 2 work.

Did you go with bypass in the end ? Have you had your training ? What was it like ?.
Im just about to book my class two and eventually class one and am undecided between 2 start or bypass.
I live near Southampton and called up a few places including bypass but I settled with Dan at Hampshire Towing in the end. Picked it up pretty quickly and would recommend him. He also taught me trailer training first which was a great success. Lorry HGV & LGV Training Southampton - Hampshire Towing Might help you out anyways.
