Trainee lorry driver jobs?

Hi I’m looking to become a lorry driver once I have the funds in a few months, occasionally when looking at jobs I come across these trainee lorry driver jobs I naturally think no can’t be true.
Just after some advice on what you guys think have any of you tried these?

HGV Training Network is a HGV training broker, most people on this board, myself included, will advise you to avoid brokers because generally you can’t believe anything they say.

Your best bet for training is to have assessment drives with a couple of local companies, meet the people who will be training you then decide which company to go with.

If you tell us which part of the country you’re in someone may be able to recommend a good HGV training company in your area.

Just as I thought thanks again

A few of the big companies do ‘apprentice’ type training to get a C+E license, some from a car license others want you to have a C license.

Just read very carefully the T & C’s. The way I did it was just put in on a credit card with long no interest. I think Barclay’s were offering 42 months interest free as long as you pay the minimum at least every month.

Where would I find these kinds of jobs mrginge?

John Lewis, Cemex, Downton’s (I think), Stobart’s, just Google HGV Driver Apprenticeships.

jlpjobs.com/apprenticeships/john … transport/

That’s the John Lewis one and to be honest it sounds painful to me. They are probably going to pay you ‘Apprentice wages’ for the whole 12 month’s.

I’ll have a look can’t really afford to go on a apprentice wage now as I’m 25 not sure many will take me on. Thank you

I know 3k seems a lot, but as Mr gringe says, get a 0% card, ( see money saving expert for what’s on offer currently), and pay it back before the interest kicks in.

Look at it this way, graduates leaving uni with 27k+ of debt , half of which will end up in jobs paying no more than 25k, cos they did a rubbish degree.

It’s tough for everyone when they start. There are firms that take on newbies, some of them even pay well  , though you have to be lucky to get a job in those kinds of places.

Before going into debt do plenty of research, read plenty of the threads on this board and ask as many questions as you like.

While most people like the job there have been people who don’t and end up regretting spending so much money on training.

I don’t want to put you off the idea but driving HGVs for a living isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, so do the research before spending a lot of money on it

Doh! Meant to add make sure it’s a job that suits. If it doesn’t suit your personality, then you spend a lot of time on your own thinking how rubbish it all is!

I keep getting emails everyday for a trainee lorry driver with a 24 grand wage. I don’t know why they send them to me cos A) I am a lorry driver, and B) I’m way past the age of being a trainee. 40 years ago yeah. I’d avoid that stuff and if you want to be a trainee then knock on the door of your local transport company. There’s one round here that takes you from B to C1 to C and C+E. Presumably you sign a contract. Gotta be better than getting a broker involved cos they’re just another mouth to feed. Good luck

I’m doing an apprenticeship with Whistl, but as others said I’ve had apprenticeship wages set for 12 months. I’ve started my class 2 training after 4 months and aparently doing C+E possibly after the same duration. I am also 25.

My experience has been fairly positive with them so far - but I have had to do van driving up to this point as well as drivers mate duties and some paperwork too on a sort of level 3 logistics course.

The overall workload is not bad, and shouldn’t be too many hours after training which could be a bad thing money wise if the contract after training is long.

Companies link brakes and bidvest do “apprentice” driver jobs, you start on a van for a while, usually up to a year so they get to know you, then put you through class 2, wage for vans around £15-18k, paid by hour, then you need to sign to stay for a year after you pass your class 2. It’s hard work but no £90 a week apprentice wages
