As you may know from my previous posts I have been looking to take the plunge and change carriers for sometime. Having a break from work and coming back has just reinforced my thinking.
I was wondering if there are any drivers out there (preferably female buy not necessarily) who’d be willing to have a travel buddy for a day? To make sure I’m def doing the right thing I’d love the opportunity to be a fly on the wall for a day and see what really goes on, and how woman get on in the industry. I’m In West Yorkshire but I can meet you anywhere and I can promise tea, biscuits and good conversation!
Hi Loza!
I’m sure there are people in your area that would be willing to help, and there are a few ladies around here. Possibly more than you think the way handbags get thrown around from time to time!
However, while a driver may be willing to help, insurance and an understanding boss/Transport Manager is another thing. As a lot of firms have a policy about NOT carrying passengers, and even if a blind eye is turned, you probably won’t be insured to be in the vehicle. So if say the worst happened, you may find yourself regretting the decision…
I’m not saying your idea is dead in the water, just that it may not be straightforward and this is the issue I foresee!
They might say “your not insured as a passenger”, but that really is ■■■■■■■■. It would just be a company policy advocating no passengers. You cannot uninsure a passenger seat
Good luck with the hunt, you’ll probably need a hi viz and some safety boots too, but otherwise its just a case of looking around until you find someone nice enough ,who is allowed, to let you in their space for a day… I’d offer as my gaffer is fine about such things, (he doesn’t care if I murder prostitutes or passengers…) but alas I’m too far south for you!
Hi Loza have you had a look on youtube? Russell Worthing is my favourite Saturday morning entertainment, or Mark Hickey (though he doesn’t seem to have done much lately). They’re both class 1 drivers but it gives you an insight into the day to day workings of what they do.
The other thing is that there are different driving jobs out there too so maybe have a think about the type of work you’d like to do.
Thanks guys - really liked your posts, though I’m not sure how much help I’d be with body disposal he he
I’ve sent out some emails to some companies so I’ll see what they come back with. In the mean time I’m going to look at doing my driver training so if anyone can recommend a decent training firm in the Yorkshire area it would be greatly appreciated.
