Trailers that require to be on an Operator Licence

Out of my comfort zone with this one so any help would be appreciated. I am aware that there is a basic 3.5 tonne limit for Goods Vehicles to require an Operator Licence and then be listed on that Licence and have PMI intervals set. But what about trailers? At what weight / configuration construction to they have to become “shown” on an Operator Licence and it seems further clouded by the small trailer exemption.

Well anything over 3.5ton needs a tacho and o licence so any vehicle or combo over 3.5 ton that meets those requirements would in theory need to be added to the o licence.

I would hazard a guess that is the case.

But also the o licence would need to have enough spare allocations for units/trailers to be able to add them in the first instance.

Out of date link removed.

To illustrate the dangers of ‘Googling,’ simcor’s link goes to a document that the cover page tells us was last revised in 2011.

I thought the references to VOSA looked a little dated!!

Crikey didn’t look that closely but thought it may contain some useful info. Could have sworn it came from. Gov website unless I clicked on something else. My bad.

It was a result from .gov.uk but obviously a very old cached link at the top search result.

gov.uk/being-a-goods-vehicle-operator
That hopefully is more up to date and may contain some info that is of help.

2011 was the last major change in law on this area ,but the op will not require an olicence for own goods using up to a 3.5 tonne gross vehicle with trailer up to the permitted train weight of that vehicle so like 7 tonne gtw just need to use tachograph if not hire or reward .

Hope Carryfast doesn’t see this post or if run into 20 pages as he is the man for small trailers :open_mouth:
