Thats how I remember it lol
Trailer is 8’ 3" (2.55m)
Truck Width 8’ 6" ( 2.63m)
2.5 metres, unless it is a fridge. That’s the external width. In practice there is between 2.45 and 2.5 metres of useable width (takes two 1.2 metre pallets) inside both.
It always surprises me how often FLT drivers don’t think they can get two pallets end to end across a trailer.

If you’d seen some of the chimps who drive our FLT’s you’d be surprised that they could get any on at all!

one of us needs a new tape ‘cos 2.63m is 8’ 7 1/2" and 2.55 is 8’4"
The above answers are close, but sadly no goldfish was won;
http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/cms/pdf/2009-Oversize-&-Weight-limits.pdf
This Note sets out the current maximum size and weight of lorries used on UK roads, the various changes there have been to the rules, usually as a result of EU initiatives, and the enforcement system for monitoring compliance. It also gives the current state of play regarding the continued speculation that longer, heavier lorries will be forced on the UK’s roads by the European Commission. Further information on road transport issues can be found on the relevant page of the Parliament website.
The current UK limits, set out in full in the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 (SI 1986/1078), as amended, are as follows:
weight44 tonnes for lorries with 6 axles; drive axle(s) must not exceed 10500kg and have road friendly suspension OR have a maximum axle weight not exceeding 8500kg. Each part of the combination must have 3 axles and the trailer must have road friendly suspension. Additionally, an engine complying with at least Euro 2 specification (or gas) is needed for operation over 41000kg.
40 tonnes for lorries with 5 axles with maximum axle weight limit of 11.5 tonnes
length12 metres for a rigid vehicle
16.5 metres for an articulated vehicle if the articulated combination can turn within a concentric radii of 12.5 metres and 5.3 metres; otherwise 15.5 metres
18.75 metres for a road train (a combination of a lorry and a trailer)
width2.55 metres excluding driving mirrors
refrigerated vehicles are permitted to be 2.6 metres wide to allow for the extra thickness of the insulation
heightno limit, but wherever possible a maximum of 4.95 metres should be adhered to in order to make maximum use of the motorway and trunk road network
all the above post is metric.
is it me or do we in the UK still officially use imperial.
seems the metric stuff is creeping in more and more.
Bring back ponds/shillings and pence + the guinea.

Eammon is alright, just some of the loaders in there are bloody useless, you can live load at Edmonton and get all your bars in the right place, drop trailer in Wakefield and the bars are all over the place when they’ve loaded it.
Even car trailers can be 2.5 metres wide from last October 2011.
Inside 2,42 Meter
outside 2,50 Meter
Some Country have 2,60 Meter and Fridge are wider too
Finland used to have 2m60 until two or three years back when the widths were brought down to 2m55. Then firms basically had a choice of shaving 2,5cm off each side or 5cm out of the middle, and welding them back up again. If anybody needed proof that the world had gome mad…

Erm… I think the UK officially went metric 30 odd years ago. The trouble is no one took any notice. Kids at school have been taught in metric units for years but they still measure their weight in stones, their height in feet and inches and buy their beer in pints.
We buy petrol in litres and then do a complicated calculation to work out our mpg. On the other hand we drive a 44tonne lorry and it’s a lot easier to work out that 12 1000kg pallets plus 20 800kg pallets will be too much. The trailer may be 13½ metres long but we still call it a 45 foot trailer - (even though it’s only 44¼.)
Basically this country is pretty bi-lingual when it comes to weights and measures and long may it be so.
I agree about the ponds though - where will the ducks go when they are all filled in?
