Trailer heights

I still have not got my head round trailer heights class 1. The trailer that you hitch up to on the head board it will give a height in meters or feet,

is that the height when the trailer is on the ground with its legs down or is it the height when its on the unit, If on the unit then when i pump up the suspension does that increase the height, and if so by how much.

And sometimes the height is not mentioned on the head board, do i need a tape measure.
comments appreciated

It’s the height when coupled to a tractor unit and an addition it will say the height as when coupled to a XXXX mm fifth wheel. At least it should do as otherwise the height is meaningless because not all trucks have a fifth wheel the same height from the ground.

Yes it would, and it would increase by however much you lift the suspension. You shouldn’t really be raising the suspension for normal running purposes anyway.

It is the only sure fire way to know the height and if you don’t know the height of your fifth wheel you can measure that to see how it compares to the details given on the headboard.

Remember there are so many variables between trucks, wheel size, tyre profile, fifth wheel height etc that the only way to be sure is to measure.

Not on all - TNT’s trailers tell you the height of the box itself - so you have to add on your fifth wheel height or it is meaningless… …

… … out of interest - does anyone carry a tape for checking heights ■■

I carry one of those steel retractable jobs, a 5 metre one. It’s not just for measuring trailer heights though, it is also used for checking the width and height of doorways etc for getting machines through when I have to get them from the trailer to the installation point, or vice versa.

Somerfield in Bridgwater (run by Wincanton) had the box height on the trailer and the fifth wheel height on the unit; made life nice and easy

Yep. I’ve got an 8-metre Stanley jobbie in my bag. But then, I’m a bit of a paranoid newbie…

thanks good 2 know that a tape measure is not a stupid thing to carry, and did you know that the minimum wage from october will be £5.35, its nearly catching up to the £6.00 per hour you get as a wage from agency rates

Is that an ‘ego’ thing?

I manage with a three metre tape. Stand on the catwalk. Measure up. Measure down. Add them together - then replace socks and shoes.

i have a tape of 16’ but also have measured every unit and trailer in the yard, when things where slow, write it down for reference, and you cant go wrong.have also got 13’6’’ under a 13’3’’ bridge with mill’s to spare, only by dumping all the air with some weight on,then releveling the unit.but its not the recommended thing to do.

Heh.

No, I just looked for a tape which was a bit wider, and with a bit more “curve” to it, so that it would stand upright better. Given the choice between a cheap B&Q one which wouldn’t stay rigid for more than about a metre, and a decent Stanley one, I chose the good one.

And yes, I know that sounds just as dodgy…
