Trailer doors flung open on roundabout

a word of warning to you all, before you set off from your del/col point always make sure your trailer doors are secured.

as yesterday in spalding at the morrisons roundabout at about 5:30pm a tautliner pulled onto the roundabout and his rear doors flung open as he set off and went around the roundabout :open_mouth: car drivers were trying to get his attention as i could hear all the horn blaring but not sure if driver realised what had happened. i was heading past him turning down the road he was queing at and saw in my rear mirror as he pulled away his doors started swinging, horns were blarning but he seemed to carry on regardless :exclamation: assuming he pulled over further up WTL but lost sight of him as i went round the corner.

good job he didnt have a pallet truck not secured on the back of his truck :exclamation: ouch.

Little point in securing the door when the load is unsecured

Once I was approaching a roundabout on the A17 behind a small queue, I could see a truck at the front had his doors swinging and none of the cars seemed to be bothered so I went into the inside lane to catch up, undertook the truck and started beeping at him as I drew level. I got a lot of coffee beans signs and he couldn’t seem to understand what I was pointing at the truck for. Like I thought he was going to slow and was overtaking him. He did eventually figure it out a few 100 yards further and stopped, I wound the window down and shouted his doors were open and he just got out the cab :arrow_right: No thanks or apologies for the coffee beans.

Made me think why did I bother trying to help. Should have just left him to have an accident.

This is a problem far too easily done but also easily rectified. Once I was behind such a vehicle going along a country A road with the nearside rear door swinging. Took him a while to notice my honking and flashing but before he did the door whacked a road sign on a pole and rotated it 360 degrees. Both amusing and scary I thought.

I was on the m4 early one morning and was coming up behind a lorry with its rear door swinging open, there were 2 car drivers by the side of him beeping and a car driver behind him flashing his lights which didn’t get his attention, I thought I would give him some sort of sign language for ‘your back doors swinging open’ if I got along side him  but as he passed one of the on-slips there was a VOSA vehicle parked up and they managed to sort it out.

My offside rear trailer door came open in Hoylake once, and as I had driven from Sittingbourne with no problem, and as it happened just after a gang of scallies had just crossed the road behind me, I suspect they did it just for jolly.

Saw a foreign artic with one of his rear doors open on the M6 once, the driver was oblivious to it, although it wasnt exactly swinging, think it was a stiff door

Handy little tip that, thanks for the heads up.

Early one winters morning I was plodding up Reigate hill on the M25 when a artic passed by with the shutter door fully open, pallets dancing about close to the edge, couldn’t do alot as he was going faster than me, but another truck passed by, caught up to him and I think tried to warn to the driver but he just carried on oblivious, luckily he still had a full load as he pulled off at junction 10.

A couple of years ago I was following an artic down the A1 who’s o/s curtain was blowing all over the place, me and other drivers were doing our best to warn the driver but no good, eventually the whole thing blew off poles and all! It landed partly on the road, part on the verge. Even though I kept well back the thing stayed in the air for ages and didn’t give me time to react when it came down all of a sudden luckily it landed and I ran it over, couldve been much worse though.

God knows how the (foreign) driver didn’t see it, it was yellow and blowing right out but he just carried on at the same speed!

They do say that as one door closes…another one opens    …sorry
