Trailer brakes, do you use them?

I use them everytime but i know others dont.

Opinions on a postcard.

Simon.

Only use them on sloping yards or if they come on automatically
But there i’m an old git that should no better

Most of the time. Ours are on the headboard next to the lines so it’s easy enough to remember.

Always use it, that way, if anything goes wrong, I can say I’ve done all I could.

Obviously I’ve forgotten in the past, but try to always use it.

Used to do reefers and they were split couple, so had to use it then.

I’ve tried pulling a trailer with the brake still on where I’ve forgotten to take it off too

Everytime…Our outfits are close coupled fridges which means split coupling so the first thing I check is the trailer brake.

I always use the trailer brake, always have and always will.

Only idiots & dead people don’t apply trailer brakes when they drop them, or check the brakes applied prior to picking a trailer up. If you don’t you will probably be 1 or the other at some point.
There’s nothing saying you can’t pull the button after pulling the lines when you drop a trailer. But whichever way you do it, just do it. Make it part of your routine

I’m not dead so guess what i am

i don’t use the trailer brake for a very good reason.
i’ve always done a lot of dock work, and you can’t get down the side of the trailers to apply, or release the button, and the tug drivers don’t give a {zb}, they’d just drag the tread off the tyres.
but that makes me an idiot for some reason.

You make it too easy to worth bothering

The companies I work for all have policies that trailer brakes must be applied without fail. Anyone found to have not set the brake when dropping a trailer gets a warning & if it happens again then they don’t have you back, so I’ve just got used to doing it every time, even if I’m just doing a trailer swap.

One company has a separate trailer brake, as well as the usual one there’s one that automatically springs out as soon as the red airline is disconnected & you have to push it back in when you connect up again, can’t remember the name that they give it offhand.

Some Tesco trailers used to do that, the park brake was near the suzi’s (where it should be in my opinion) and when you dropped the red airline, it popped out, so trailer brake was on.

one of my duties as shunter is to do a park brake check on every trailer in our yard at least once per shift.

I shunt as well, and do the same.

I recently saw a driver get out the cab, undo the dog clip and release the fifth wheel, he never applied the trailer brake !

I asked him why he used that procedure and he answered “I always do !” (Cretin !)

The next day one of our fitters was on the trailer park and asked me if I applied the trailer brake, I replied, “Of course”

He then went on to explain, the height of the fifth wheel is the problem, and several years ago a trailer rolled off the plate and crushed a driver to death !

If you don’t apply the trailer brake your an idiot.

Have to use it to stretch the trailer, but other than that I must be an idiot :unamused: :unamused:

Always. Why would you not ■■? :open_mouth: Part of B.L.A.N.K routine that mean I don’t miss anything

Well there you go, nothing to worry about the shunter checks em anyway

SSW! and if you don’t use trailer brake and god forbid any fatality occurs because of not using it will be a severe headache for you and your boss when the HSE get involved! :open_mouth:

Just use it! :unamused:

YEAH Cant trust these bloody shunters

I use the trailer brakes all the time, its hard to stop 40tons with just the unit brakes :stuck_out_tongue:

oh, you mean the parking brake :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :unamused:
disconnect red air line brakes come on? or is that just mine? surely they’re all the same?
if you drop a trailer and the air leaks enough to release the brakes don’t drop it take it to be fixed :bulb:
