Can someone just give me a quick run down on trailer ABS systems. Was moving the trailer in the yard the other day and i noticed when i braked the green light came on on the trailer and it said something on the truck display but i didn’t quite catch what.
What does the green light actually indicate? I think the symbol on the dash was something like ((R)) but will try get a photo next time i’m in it
Normally the green light comes on when you use the brakes when you are travelling at low speed (such as manuvering around the yard ) My experience tends to be that once you get above 10 - 15mph the abs system kicks in properly and the green light/symbol on dash dissappears.
Suedehead:
Think you will find that if the green light comes on when you press the brake when stationary/slow moving, it means that the abs is working fine.
This is correct.
Along with this,on our Axor tractors, there is an amber light on the dash for the ABS that goes out when you get above 15 kph.
I understood that the green light on the trailer should come on when you brake and then go off, even though you are still braking. If it stays on all the time whilst braking there is a fault.
But I am not sure if this actually applies to ABS systems or just older trailers with skidcheck systems.
Another way of telling if the abs was working properley was the tell tale sound of 2 or 3 loud “clicky/hissing” noises coming from the trailer, when the ignition is turned on.
No clicky/hissing noise . . no abs
The green lamp is normally an early skidcheck system and a green flash indicates everything is in order. However the later ABS is more complicated and the warning is more detailed in the cab. Normally it is fine if as said, you hear the 2 clicky hisses when you turn the power on, the lamps will go out when you reach about 6mph.
There may be compatibility problems with some units and trailers, some will have a corroded sensor on the axle. No ABS doesn’t mean No Brakes. The brakes still work but get any red warning checked immediately, we have to report all showings, even amber warnings get checked since a new trailer was found with a cracked disc.
