Traffic light shutters

Does anyone know what the logic is behind the shutters sometimes placed on traffic lights which appear to be designed to prevent the green light being visible from the elevated driving position in trucks?

Ive always assumed they are on lights prone to being obscured by bright sunlight

The shutters are age related, once you can no longer see the green light, it is time to stop driving

Dave.

The same mindset that erects fencing on the approach to roundabouts to totally obscure vision and also to planting shrubs etc on same.

The traffic light meddling is a neat way of forcing traffic to a near standstill - not so bad for cars and vans but trucks are met with blank lenses until you’re almost on top of them.

Always thought it was to stop people at the next lights “going early” , so they were to obstruct their view.

Ha, I’ve often wondered about all of those things, they all seem completely crazy.

+1000.

All in the name of cutting emissions, forcing the lorry to a near standstill or complete halt instead of moving smoothly through the junction by pre timing ones approach is so much better for the environment, saves fuel you know in lalaland :unamused:

So true !

I’m just warming up here,

speed humps, calming cushions whatever you wanna call them - all drivers on and off the gas pumping out extra emissions into the neighbourhood schools etc, wrecking tyres and suspension components

traffic light control systems that work 300% better when there’s a power cut (go figure)

pedestrian crossings that are just a 100m apart from each other

junction layouts where a minor road has priority over a main one

Over the years our local lot has systematically done everything possible to hamper traffic flow - and now when we are in the top ten of the slowest conurbations in the country, they’re wringing their hands and actually asking via the local rag if anybody has any suggestions :open_mouth:

That last sentence made me wonder whether to laugh or cry, you really couldn’t make it up :open_mouth:

Add to the list…

Pointless paint. Complete lanes that used to let traffic flow using inside or outside lanes painted over. Painting the B3934 or whatever and it’s destination on a roundabout is useless. Those who live locally don’t care what number the road is because they know where it goes and those who don’t aren’t informed by the number just it’s destination. More so now that everyone Satnavs things anyway.

We used to have double white lines and everyone knew what that meant. Now we have a red section with lines and chevrons. WTF does that mean?

Traffic lights on roundabouts that operate 24/7…AAAARRRRGGHHHH! Switch 'em on at 06.00 and turn 'em off at 21.00. As already mentioned, some roundabouts actually flow better without lights.

Traffic lights on roundabouts at night totally buzzed me off!!! For example, the A1/M18 massive roundabout. The lights stop you for mr. Nobody then just as mr. Somebody comes to the lights they turn red stopping him to let you go so effectively both vehicles had to stop then emit loads of co2 or whatever to get going again and for no reason. As said, turn the bloody things off at night! We should all understand give way to the right by now [emoji57]

Think of the power savings too! :open_mouth:

That, or if there is a chance that a vehicle might be able to see it, but it doesn’t apply to them. Such as when you have 2 days of lights in quick succession, or you drive for uber

M5 J6, all the road signs obscured by direction arrows… How did people manage to keep left or right before they were there?!
