Traffic accident -alconbury

According to the Peterborough telegraph, a car and lorry were involved in a collision at 4pm today on the A14 spur road which led to the HGV drivers death. My sympathies to any family they may have.

RIP drive

Sad, sympathies to the family…

I passed that going north tonight, judging by the damage to the Front of the HGV there was another HGV involved ( if you get what I’m hinting at), this was the second traffic accident I’ve past today that had screens erected around it, so all in all at least two families lives shattered. This is neither the time nor the place for speculation but we seriously need to get our house in order. If we don’t then the powers that be will do.

Rip drivers.

True and the ‘powers that be’ are now well aware which type of vehicles are involved in the most serious accidents which are causing long closures etc and there is plenty of work ongoing to start clamping down on it

A serious injury 3 car crash at Girton A14 slip road yesterday ‘possibly’ caused by a drunk driver. A14 Spittals to Alconbury a car and caravan break down, partly on verge and partly in lane 1, get wiped out by a truck. Same time A14 Alconbury to Spittals a 7.5t rear ends a brick truck taking out two cars as well. Luckily the VW Golf didn’t have any passengers or it could have been a lot worse. RIP to the 7.5t driver, but at least he didn’t suffer. :frowning:

Police are appealing for witnesses after a lorry driver died in a crash on the A14 near Huntingdon yesterday (Monday)

A man in his 50s died after the lorry he was driving was in collision with another lorry at just before 4pm.

The collision happened on the eastbound carriage way of the A14 between Alconbury and Spitalls interchange.

A total of four vehicles were involved in the incident: two DAF HGVs and two cars; a Volkswagen Golf and a Vauxhall Corsa.

The driver of the other HGV was uninjured. The driver and passenger of one of the cars suffered minor injuries.

Police are currently trying to contact the next of kin of the deceased driver, who was from Yorkshire.

Anyone with information should call PC James Thorne in the road policing unit on 101.

Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone with dash-camera footage to make contact.

5 accidents in 3 hours in total on the A14 yesterday afternoon.

The first collision involving three cars took place at Girton at 1.05pm. One person was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge with a serious injury.

At Godmanchester at 2.24pm a car collided with lorry, nobody was injured.

An hour later at Alconbury a car towing a caravan collided with a lorry, again nobody was injured.

At Alconbury at 3.53pm a car collided with a lorry and the HGV driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

At Alconbury at 4.22pm there was a single vehicle collision – details not known.

It was mayhem. I think it should read that a truck collided with a caravan, seeing, as far as I’m aware, the car and caravan had broke down and was stationary when the truck hit it.

IMO there does seem to be an increasing amount of ’ rear end shunts ’ involving LGV’s. I am certainly no expert in statistics or road safety, so I have just had a root around on the web. It does indeed suggest that fatal/serious accidents involving LGV’s are on the increase. I would assume that an increase in traffic would increase the ACTUAL number of incidents, but not necessarily the percentage of incidents.
Other reasons cited are poor refuge availability ( obviously lack of shoulder on single/dual carriageways ), ineffective traffic monitoring, ( presumably HA or council response, lane closure or lightboard indicators etc ), and ’ other ’ factors.

It would appear to me though, that very little blame ever appears to be pointed at the drivers.

Surely as drivers we are capable of maintaining separation distance? I know people will jump into the gap as soon as it appears, but we cant ’ fix ’ other peoples driving, however we sure as hell can control our own.

I reckon a rise in gadgets and in cab distractions must be contributing, and maybe a generally poor training regime also.

Any thoughts?

That prognosis sounds reasonable to me Beaver, and you’re right that you can’t control the bellend car drivers on the roads.
And when I’m finally diagnosed with tourette’s and need therapy, I’m sending them the bill! :smiling_imp:

All the gadgets, gismos and vehicle improvements have to be a contributing factor. As when I was a pup, just keeping my old mini in lane was difficult enough. But now you can drive with one finger at 90+ miles an hour sipping a coffee and looking forward to reusing the cup!

I’m not sure if the government don’t care about improving things, or are just hoping and waiting for autonomous vehicles to become a reality. I don’t think this is going to happen overnight, but I can see improvements in technology to prevent or warn drivers against tailgating etc, as well as mandatory devices in car that are directly linked to your insurance company & premium…

So I think we will have to wait until technology really starts to highlight poor driving, and when that starts to hurt the driver in the pocket, maybe they will change their driving habits…

" …hurt the driver in the pocket…"

A good point Evil. Punishment in one form or another, is something that may work. However enforcing better driving would obviously require an awful lot more police, which doesn’t look like it would ever happen.

Add to that the ’ Human rights ’ mob who would all cry about ’ victimisation ', or some other nonsense and you end up with the sad realisation that [zb] all will happen.

You say that about more police, but with my crystal ball (the left one) I can see the possibility of a lot more camera on the bigger roads, with systems that monitor things like driving distances. So quite quickly you could start to build up statistics of how a particular vehicle is being driven, and I’m sure the insurance companies would be all over data like that.

I’m not a fan of hurting motorists in the pocket, but i can’t see an alternative.
