trade platers

just like to say through this site to all trade platers,if i see you on the road,as much as i would like to give you a lift like a majority of drivers i cannot due to insurance purposes,i allways feel bad when i go past especially if i am going their way but not a lot i can do about it,i dont know why companies cannot come up with something regarding this issue,i e sign a disclaimer if you want a lift, not sure of the legality of it but something should be done so we can at least give trade platers a lift,so for future reference apologies up front chaps

I’ve picked a few up, usually they’re good craic. The ones that stand at round about exits must be there for hours though.

Someone might find out if, say for instance, the trade plater’s dead body has to be cut out of the wreckage after an accident.

Not necessarily.

Having done a bit of tradeplating, all help is welcome. I never chatted too much or threw wet bags on bunks etc…And hardly any lifts came from trucks. Reps in Audi’s are the most accommodating.(Especially the girl who picked me up near Preston New Years Eve and took me all the way to Cribbs Causeway, even though she lived in Stroud!)

The insurance thing is only bollox in that theses other passengers whilst cannot be excluded from any insurance policies, a company might not appreciate the extra hassle of dealing with your passengers that you chose to pick up in the event of an accident.

I picked 1 up recently on my trip to heysham, bit of a bell-end but made the miles pass by quicker :grin::grin:

I was a trade plater for a short while and I know what its like to be stuck on a slip road waiting for what seems like an eternity…:mad::mad:

How did you get that plate as your sig lol

I’ve done a fair bit of hitch hiking in the past and never had a lift off a trade plater. One told me they weren’t allowed to take passengers due to insurance purposes.I always think of this when I drive past them and give them the thumbs up.

I have been trade plating since I “retired” and I will stop for ANY hitchiker providing they are reasonably clean, The insurance issue doesn’t worry me, But you get some kids who have say been a week in a field at a pop concert without a shower or proper wash, At least 99% of platers turn out every morning freshly showered, there is of course always the exception, but most of us are clean and like myself an ex ME driver always have a good rapport with anyone who picks me up.

NICE!

Just to inject a little more on this subject, Trade Platers are not hitch hikers, most of us (apart from the car movers) are HGV drivers who choose to move new, and different stuff rather than be in the same truck day after day, week after week. This week for example I have moved aVolvo FH unit, a merc. snowplough and a Volvo dustbin wagon, tomorrow I will be moving another snowplough to Scotland.when I have signed it off I will be coming home on the train, or I will phone round to other trade platers to see if anyone is coming back south.
When you get into your truck on a monday morning , think how it got there,It didn’t materialise out of thin air, either Me or someone like me brought it to you when it was brand new. A few have never done anything else but plating, but In a lot of cases, like me, some of us spent years on the road and are doing the job after retirement age because there is very little physical work involved, and having spent years on the road I try to keep a truck clean and tidy for the driver who is taking it over .
