Tractor and trailer

what licence is required for a tractor and trailer?
my son has a provisional car licence at the moment, but he’s thinking of getting a tractor for his new venture. (chip off the old block) .

Are you talking about an agricultural setup or an articulated lorry and its trailer?

agricultural.
sorry, just realised how it read.

A tractor licence, it comes free with a standard car licence

If he doesn’t want to take his proper car test he can just take a tractor test. Gross train weight of 24 tons or thereabouts. I think there are some maximum width rules as well.

cheers.
i wasn’t sure if there was a test. when i was a young pup, we just got in and drove.
i’ve told him it’s about time he made some money for himself, rather than living of me and his mum, and he’s determined to do it.
the plan is, he will make enough money to pay for his lessons in a car, then buy a car himself.
and if he manages it. i’ll give him the money anyway. i just want him to prove he can do it.
it’s what my dad did with me.

He’s go’n to have a rough week Tramping with a Tractor n Trailer tho!

I dont think you need a licence to drive a vehicle that moves slower than walking pace.

I’m getting one next week that should be good for around 65k!!

You can drive an agricultural tractor & trailer on a moped licence and actually as a mobile crane is in the same class you can drive a 100 ton crane on one too.

Road roller 5mph Licence Needed
Tracked Vehicle 20mph Licence Needed

So speed has no relevance

all changed on the crane front, you need the relevant lgv licence to the weight now.

look for a story in bolton about a lad who drives one instead of a car cos it’s cheaper than car tax to run etc,
last year i think it was in bolton rag.

it makes sense to me!!

Not sure of the exact law, but i think your on dodgy ground using a tractor for anything other then genral farming, a builder I know used to run one around to move earth etc and he got stopped by VOSA and told he needed a HGV C+E, tachograph and an opperators licence for it, not sure what the rules are if you are just using it for privrate transport but you may find you need a cat C for that aswell as the licence catogry for tractor states AGRICULTURAL TRACTOR hence why builders etc need a c+e
