I downloaded it today. However once I downloaded it I had a thought. I take boxes to high risk areas but do not come into contact with anyone over then the gatehouse.
So my question is will it tell me to self isolate when I go to these places?
The App has two separate functions.
One is contact tracing which uses the Bluetooth radio on your phone. The App constantly “pings” other phones which are running the App nearby using a low power mode which allows it to estimate how far away the other phone is. If you spend more than 15 minutes or so in close proximity (less than 2-4 metres) to another user, the “contact” is registered on your phone. If that person tests positive for the virus in the next couple of weeks, you get a notification to self-isolate. None of this has anything to do with geographic location.
The other function of the App is to allow you to “scan in” to a venue (eg a pub, shop etc). The App uses the camera on your phone to read the QR “barcode” displayed at the location, but it requires that you actively use this (ie that you point the camera at the QR code and tap the relevant button in the App). The idea being that you can be contacted if a local outbreak is traced to that particular location. If you are not scanning the QR code at the “high risk” locations that you visit, the App won’t know that you’ve been there.
I think that’s all correct.
.
're the QR code, if you visit a place that is a “hot spot” you won’t be told to self isolate, but will be warned to look out for symptoms.
I’ll stand correction if I’ve got that wrong.

I get the scan in bit.
But do you then scan out when you leave.
As an outbreak could be detected weeks after you visited the premises.
And obviously it was safe at the time of your visit.
But I do feel given time rdcs and the like so start to insist you scan in . And if you refuse delivery will be refused as

There is currently no facility to “scan out” - but it’s not needed. The idea is that if an outbreak is traced to a location that you’ve recently visited, you’ll be warned. This is not the same as the “self-isolate now” message that you’ll receive if you appear to have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive.
oldwelshdude:
I certainly won’t be downloading it. I’m in places for hours sometimes and I don’t want to be falsely told I need to isolate for 14 days
You won’t be. You’ll just get a warning notification saying that you’ve been somewhere at high risk and to watch for any symptoms developing. That’s onky if you scan in.
As explained above, if you get the notification to isolate it means you’ve been close enough to someone who has tested positive for long enough that transmission may happen, in which case isolate.
Me, I’m cruising hotspots. I’m happy having two weeks off work, even on SSP!

You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave[/qI
Just do what I have - grab your own QR code from the Gov website, keep a copy in your cab/bag and “scan in” to your own workspace whenever you leave a location where you have scanned their QR code.
