Tower Bridge Shut

Due to a 1000lb bomb being found in the area!

London’s Tower Bridge was shut to traffic today after an unexploded Second World War bomb was dug up by builders.

Construction workers on a site in The Grange, Bermondsey, alerted police shortly after the discovery at 9.15am on Monday.

The huge explosive is believed to be around 5ft long and 1,000lbs in weight.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from flat blocks on large estates surrounding the site and two schools had to be shut as a precaution.

Them Germans, the buggers !!

The police shut most of central South East London.

They were preventing traffic approaching the Tower Bridge area from Borough Road and extended this down to Old Kent Road to try and reduce the traffic. This went as far east as Bermondsey, the traffic was in chaos

Don’t panic Cpt Manering don’t Panic

Pretty inaccurate reporting by the media i.e. the Independent
" The huge explosive is believed to be around 5ft long and 1,000lbs in weight " so are they implying it went off ?

" The London Fire Brigade, who sent specialist units to the scene, said it has attended incidents involving seven unexploded bombs and five hand grenades in the capital over the last five years " so why the hell do the armed forced have bomb disposal… its there field of work… not the fire bridge

Media quote
" thought to be approximately five foot long and 1,000lbs in weight "…if its approx. 5ft general speaking its a general purpose bomb, to small to be 1000lb

I’d still make sure I had me fingers in me ears in case it went off.

Let it blow, What cyclists :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

Bomb disposal would have been there to deal with a unstable explosive device, the fire brigade only attended the situation incase it goes bang

Er, no.
An explosive, is a reactive substance that contains a great amount of potential energy that can produce an explosion if released.

I lived in Bermondsey in the 70’s and 80’s and nothing this exciting happened in those days.

Since when have the media ever let accurate reporting get in the way of a sensational headline?

He’s an ATO, that’s what they do. And that is probably a hell of a lot less risky than defusing an IED while under threat of being shot at by the Taliban.

Oh I don’t know. Have you ever been to Bermondsey??

I was on a flight back to London City Airport from Scotland. They closed the airspace west of LCY because the bomb was right under the final approach path so all flights had to take off and land eastwards, halfing airport capacity, so several Scottish (and other) flights were delayed or cancelled. Managed to transfer to a flight into LHR so avoided the worst of the problems.
