I’ve worked for both Fly By Nite and Stage Truck; I wouldn’t recommend Stage Truck.[…]
Furthermore, music is about to kick off massively… Few toured last year due to the Olympics so most of the tour companies are rammed with tours this year. For example, ST will be needing 105 vehicles this year due to many of their tours overlapping.
Many Thanks mate! Your post is extremely helpful.
@Harry Monk:
Thanks for that I’ll still knock at their facebook doors
@ toby1234abc:
I’ll look them up. Thanks!
lumpygreenpoo, is the money mentioned expenses on top of Your wages of £150 per day or is this charity work?
Where did I mention £150 per day? If you’re earning more than £150 per day, I suggest you stay where you are!

You did’nt I’m taking the ■■■■, You mentioned £60 per day or £80 per day, who works for this oppitance in 2013?
I will be staying where I am & would’nt climb in to a lorry for £60 per day in 2013 & if You are You need your head testing.
I have heard different views on this topic. Some say it’s a crap job where the senior drivers throw their weight around, expected to drive where and when you’re told irrespective of being legal or not. no company was mentioned so i can only write what i was told. Personally i’d love to do it, don’t mind hard work, etc. Just gotta convince the mrs first

This is true, loads of tours going out this year. If anyone wants to do it then there’s probably never been a better time to apply for a job.
I just did a 16 day tour. Very nice it was too.

Like most things in life, (re lead drivers) some good some bad I’ve always been lucky and had decent ones. They don’t suffer fools gladly, and during a load in and load out they are focused in the job, so won’t be interested in idle chit chat, or where the showers, catering etc are. Be at your truck for load in/out and you should be fine!
It’s all legal these days aswell!
Biker , some decent advice given above .
I have started to do some driving for one of the companies mentioned in this thread , and as with a lot of cases in trucking it’s a case of being in the right place at the right time . It has also helped for me to know a couple of people in the industry who have been kind enough to vouch for me . These guys have given me fantastic advice which I took on board , I’m hugely familar with the rock and roll scene from a punter’s point of view but know nothing from the backstage viewpoint . Lots to learn , so I’ve kept my mouth shut and my ears open .
You will more than likely have to start as a double driver , as I did . This gives the company a chance to see you at work and also it’s a chance to see if you are suited to this type of work . It is NOT what a lot of people may think , there’s no glamour and glitz , it’s unsociable hours and long periods away from home . Chili is spot on with lead drivers as well , don’t be a prima donna , have you and the truck where it needs to be and drive to the next venue with no drama’s .
It’s true enough that this year is busy so good luck if you get a start , and it’s also good to find catering
Thanks Chillistrucker. I’m just trying to get as much info as poss before i take the leap. I know there’s only so much you can ask, then i have to make a decision. Unsociable hours don’t bother me, as for being there for a set time, no problem, i always make the effort to be somewhere early. If it’s something i don’t know, i keep my mouth shut and ears open, and ask questions at a convinient time.Something i’ve wanted to do for a while now, just gotta convince the mrs that it’s a good move.

Think long and hard … would she be ok with you doing a 3 month tour , getting back to the yard , then getting sent straight out on another one
Well considering last week she suggested i look at working abroad for 6/12 months, she can’t really argue, as my job at the moment is very very quiet and no signs of it picking up, now may a good time to move on

i get where you’re coming from, but living on peanuts every week wears thin. And by peanuts i mean £200 a week. Yep she works, and has to pay everything from her wage and seriously struggling. So any opportunity to get a better income, even if that means elsewhere then it has to be considered, and i know there’s people worse off, just saying, and no thats not why i was looking into this type of work.
TransAm will be taking on a lot of drivers from next month, Springsteen and Bon Jovi and both out at the same time this year and both will be very big tours.
Cheers Harry.
If you can convince the mrs, then go for it!
As others have said, you will be out for what could be months on end!
I’m on a 4 month job at mo, that finishes mid June, so may be straight out on another job, but its the nature of the beast!
I try and save when I’m away so that if and when it goes quiet I can sit at home for 2 or 3 months and do nothing, apart from take a nice extended holiday somewhere!
As others have said, prima donnas don’t last long in this game, think they know it all and the whole backstage thing goes to their head, they are soon rooted out
I’d say go for it, what have you got to lose, and this year will be busy!
