Muckaway:

I’m driving this on Monday; She’s retiring on Thursday and destined for the funfair along with sister 8legger Y572. Bit of a clearout going on as artic unit Y569’s coming off the road aswell. Three less Fodens on the fleet from 2012…

Three more vehicles of a historical lorry name gone from your outfit Nathan.Get plenty of pics for your son to post on sites in 20=30 years time.
Cheers Dave.

The new Daf CF unit that’s replacing the Y reg Foden unit was broke down today…not sure what but the laptop was out on the diesel tank…

Was it you Muckers, on ‘Kevin’s Grand Design’ (C4 Thursday). My missus is watching it now and theres a Smiths 8-legger tipping gabion stone to his building site. Only a brief shot from behind but it looked like a Foden?

Not me but I do remember someone mentioning a site of his. The Bletchington wagons do most of the gabion as they’re nearest to Ardley quarry. That stuff goes all over the place; loads went to the Hindhead tunnel on the M3.

Tnet member Gearcruncher had that one new; That and Y572 were on the cover of I think Commercial Motor when new; The first Daf cabbed Fodens Smiths bought.

Contrary to what several drivers say, I found this old girl to pull fairly well, considering the fact one load was 34.700 mgw :open_mouth:  The weigher fitted is one of the old fashioned hit and miss gauges where you have to keep an eye on how it’s loaded; Too much on the rear and you need to slightly underload it, and too much on the front means you’ll be light when it reads loaded. The overload was actually bang on according to the gauge so not sure where I would’ve stood in the eyes of VOSA.
I also discovered that the veteran gearbox lets you make clutchless changes

If you work for Smiths you’ll understand

Hi Muckaway. Could you post a pic of the S&S logo thats on the air deflectors next time you have your camera handy. Hoping to have a couple of model Foden tippers done for Gaydon. Thanks.

I can do Jawwa, but I’m not back until 4th Jan. You could try www.smithsbletchington.co.uk I think they use the S & S in the page heading. From my recollection the logo hasn’t changed and is the only original piece of the old style Smith and Sons livery still used. What models you are you making?

Here’s a few pics where the air deflector logos are on view. I don’t know which Fodens you are modelling but bear in mind some have had replacement deflectors fitted (trees get caught up in them when reversing and they get ripped off-speaking from experience  ) and the logos have not been replaced. You might be able to zoom in on them…

My old lorry…note replacement air deflector without logo

Shows how they weather over a period of time

Yes those are the ones, but I could do with a close-up photo if possible (no hurry). I,ve got the other decals sorted. I will probably do an 8 wheeler version of the 3rd photo & an 8wheeler as in the first photo, but it may also end up being an artic. Never know until I start. Thanks, Dan.

On p4 I think is a photo (not great) of the original 3000 series Smiths bought L101 VLE plus photos of it reliveried and then awaiting scrapping. There’s also a close up of M911 ARK de-liveried if you want to do an alloy bodied one. Re doing an 8w 4000, we’ve still got one at head office awaiting restoration if you want to see one upclose.
