Yep, it looks like it’s earning They’ve setup sprinkler heads off the wash hoses at Gill Mill so washing downs a bit hard although a combination of dust and constant water bowser on the haul road means speckled paint jobs for all anyway. I’ve shifted 24 loads in 2 days so I think I’ll be forgiven…
Between the bin and the Stock heap? what did you do after “brew” on the first day? Nathan.Anon.

After brew? Another 6 loads Dennis! I was running recycled topsoil (basically muck that’s been put through a screener) from our pit to our old tip that we’ve sold to a tyre recycling company as part of the restoration agreement.

Tyre re-cycling Nathan! that sounds decidedly dodgy!!! If that lot catches fire there will be a “glow” over Oxfordshire for 25 years! who’s the manager of the site-----one of your P**** mates from the traveller site? Dennis.

Motorway Remoulds from Knighton had a tyre dump in a Dingle about five miles from the town.There was millions of old tyre’s and casings in there.It went on fire about twenty years ago and as you said Dennis,it burnt for years.
Cheers Dave.

Wasn’t there one in South Wales as well that burnt for years IIRC! Dennis.

That was the one at Heyope near Knighton Dennis,it made the national news…
Underground Welsh dump of ten million tyres smouldered for 15 years
by Robin Turner, Western Mail
May 28 2007
0ShareThe problem of tyre-dumping was highlighted in Wales by a massive tyre dump blaze near Knighton, Powys, that was still smouldering earlier this decade more than 15 years after it started in 1989.
The 10 million tyres lie buried in a deep wooded valley and were packed too densely for firefighters to extinguish.
The Environment Agency believes the underground fire is now out and temperature probes have not found any telltale “hotspots” but the site still has to be constantly monitored for any flare-ups.
There were few flames during what was Britain’s longest running tyre fire, but temperature readings confirmed intense heat below the surface and wisps of acrid, black smoke occasionally drifted up from the mass of rubber
Bewick:
Why couldn’t the heat have been “harnessed” in someway? Dennis.
Don’t know who would now own the dump Dennis.Motorway Remoulds went belly up as far as I know several years ago,when I drove for Brisbanes they owned the tyre factory.
Cheers Dave.

A lot of groundwork’s had to be done in there; crushed ■■■■■■■■ base and reinforced concrete on top plus a ground water storage system incase of fire so contaminated water doesn’t pollute the Windrush-a few hundred yards down the hill behind the quarry. A lot of trees have been planted to encourage various wildlife although I think that has more to do with the restoration of the site as an extinct (inert) landfill.
I’ve recently had this pic emailed to me;
The late Godfrey Smith is 2nd from right and former workshop manager ■■■■ pollard 2nd left. The new lorry was G160 BLM-the 4000th 4000 series built. The brass plaque presented to Godfrey was displayed on G160s dashboard throughout it’s time on Smiths and I think there’s a replica one in the workshop somewhere. The model is still in the Workshop managers’ office although G160 went in 2004/05 and was replaced by RX54TUW; My lorry. G160 is remembered as being one of the best lorries they’ve had and certainly the best one I’ve driven (my old S reg 4000 series came a close second )
G160 went to a local groundwork contractor who’s since packed up and nobody knows what’s happened to it since…
Another one from Orange Image search;
S148 KLM (Cat 340) new to long serving (now retired) driver Tony Doggett who also had the 4000th 4000 series new before it. This is now working in the sun with sister S147 KLM which was new to Len Jackman who now drives one of the Volvo FEs and views it as a comedown in comparisson. My old one S146 is a bit closer to home based in the slightly less sunny climate of Standlake
I had a jolly ride out yesterday; I took 10tonnes of Gill Mill Gravel Chippings to a farm at Lyne near Chertsey yesterday and then had to go to Godstone for Playpit Sand which ended up in a long-jump pit at a private school in Oxford.
Sebelkos’ North Park Quarry, Godstone. This was WBB Minerals until recently, I believe this replaced the Redhill Pit that could be seen from the M25 between J7 and 6 (used to be British Industrial Sand?)
Those Wrights wagons are working for Laing O’Rourke at Oxford Brookes, Headington. We had that job and lost it to Earthline and then they lost it (Wrights must be doing it for pocket money, more harm than good to haulage rates). They’re tipping at WRG (Dixs pit) at Stanton Harcourt, apparently on a cheap tip as WRG needs muck for landfill cover. That job was a pain in the arse; No lorries onsite before 8am, you had to have someone walk infront of you because of the students there was always a wait to load or some paddy putting a trench across the road while you’re trying to get in/out, and they used to complain if too many lorries were waiting on London Road. Oh yes, and “you’re not getting enough loads out of here”
One of our drivers used to run foundry sand out of Redhill Pit to a place at Newbury. That Sebelko place is impressive and so clean. You have to have a clean body before you go in there, no washing out allowed onsite and no weighbridge man (the bridge is automated)
On the 'bridge it’s like this
Enter vehicle reg
Enter gross weight
Collection number
Confirm you can carry what is ordered
You then get a loading ticket with your loading point on (C for playpit sand) and the shovel driver loads you (don’t drive off the road FFS!)
Once loaded you have to enter your load reference and confirm your gross weight’s ok and you get what is basically a till receipt instead of a proper ticket. No weighbridge man to hold you up while he answers the phone, watches loose women etc
