I really liked the Axor 8 wheeler I tried (T&D Truckers test July 09), nothing fancy or gimmicky in the cab,just practical stuff. The digi/fuel card slots by the tacho were a nice touch, and the long storage bunker that runs behind the seats would suit me-as I cycle to work I have recently needed somewhere to put wet weather gear! Wasn’t struck with the 9 speed box (I think a knock through is not that different to the Constructor straight 8 of 20 years ago) I’d rather have a 12 speed range/split like the Alpha.
I had an Atego demo about 4/5 years ago, straight 8 speed-worst lorry I’d ever driven; the Foden would pull 15 ton faster than the Merc could pull 10. Nasty thing…

Bit off topic mate but that looks like an old motorbike behind you, is it and if so do you know what it is?

BSA (I’m sure) that one of the fitters restored

Alpha 8 wheeler being overhauled for MOT

Another picture of Alf Garnett, sorry, Pete James; this time driving his previous 4 wheeler, a 2000 series with ■■■■■■■ 235.

more photo added soon with low loader on and s145klm actic

Tell your Dad to keep that Smiths lorry off the grass; I’ve been dragged over hot coals for going on some grass on a site. Apparently. I should’ve reversed in (with mirrors folded in :unamused: ) or reversed out (with sun in my eyes and nobody to watch me :unamused: )
Judging by the colour of the bags Andrew was going to UGS Banbury.

Pictures from Smiths archives

Gratefull assistance to Dave the renegade :smiley:

I can just about remember Drotts like this one when I was a kid. I remember one catching fire on Stanton Harcourt landfill late 80s early 90s and apparently was wrecked when fire brigade put water down the exhaust!

Anyone identify the maker of the traction engine or the location?

From Bubblemans’ scrapbook;

Another one half-inched from Bubblemans’ thread. The caption mentions this truck being the 4000th 4000 series; not true. Smiths did have the 4000th one but it was G160BLM, a 6 wheeler with a Cat 300 new to long term driver Tony Doggett. The 8 wheeler shown was new to Len “Slogger” Trafford. He was known to jack the cab up at lunchtime to polish the roof! He’d also carry paint in the cab to touch up any scratches… :open_mouth:

Remember this one was always clean. Driver used to where a white vest if I remember correct.

I can remember being loaded by a Drott like that onto an identical Bedford KM, which I drove for 8 months for C M Philpotts of Kington,Herefordshire.

That G reg didn’t stay as long as the other F and G regs; I think it went when the V regs came as I remember loading it when on the plant but it wasn’t uprated to 32 tonne gross so only carried just over 18, and it had gone by the time I was on the road.

Did Andrew get a warning for driving on the grass ? :laughing:
