thinking of going for a job with malcolm on the tippers anyone worked with them before? or any tipper drivers is it a good job , money ect… never done tipper work b4

Is this class 1 work or rigids? I’ve never done rigids, only artics but I suppose the principles are the same. For tipping make sure the ground is level, make sure the surface is firm, never pull away with the body tipped (they tend to fall over :open_mouth: ), disengage the pto before pulling away, remember to keep your sheet on when loaded. When loading make sure you load evenly, VOSA love checking axle weights, If you’re running at 44 tonne (artic) use every horsepower wisely, always make full use of your retarder (if you have one), remember when running at 44 tonne momentum is your best friend. If you’re not sure about anything, its better to ask someone! All the best.

Tiger.

I work for them at the moment out of Kilwinning, and they have the other tipper depot at South St, Glasgow.

Overall, they are OK. 7.50/h and then it jumps to ~11 ish overtime beyond your normal hours for that day. Overtime is on a per-day basis and doesn’t kick in at the end of the week if you know what i mean. You’re expected to work every other saturday sometimes, but normally finish early in the afternoon. Normally just the runs that people are desperate for.

Trucks out of Kilwinning are Volvo’s, mostly '04s and '05s. Decent enough condition considering the hammering they take. South street tends to get the newer motors like the Hino’s and a few Renaults.

Work wise, its a messy job. You’re mostly running the ■■■■■ ( sub-soil, slurry, rubble, waste, slurry ( sticky wet clay soil ) ) out of building sites and then sometimes running nice clean stuff back in ( type1, 40mm, crusher run, 6F2, top soil etc ). A lot of the stuff you run to local tips. These are manky, full of mud and the haul roads you run over are often bumpy as hell and with puddles and holes upto 1ft deep. The lorries take a fair bit of abuse doing this work and you’re bouncing around in the cab … you get used to it, but if you’ve only done road work then its a surprise just how much it lurches around.

Kilwinning take 45mins out of your day for breaks which you aint paid for, so you take your breaks. This typically works out at about 15mins @ 10am and then 30mins @ 1pm for your lunch. Actually works quite well and most drivers stick to it so you’ll find that most folk will park up at the same time and you get a bit of a blether.

You’re expected to check your wheels nuts regularly ( every day if possible ) as they loosen off with the off roading. And if you get a puncture, call it in. if your near the yard, or can get back to it, then you head in. if your away from it, then the guy will come to you to fix on site. ( a case of replacing the whole wheel )

As for learning the ropes, pretty much as tiger says, possibly with a few differences with a rigid. Sometimes pulling away with the box up makes it easy to get out of where you’ve tipped from. In a coup, the ground can be quite boggy and pulling out of the tip difficult. So with the box up and the difflocks on, the weight is on the rear drive wheels and you can pull out a little better. doesn’t always work that way, but sometimes does.
