Top speed in a lorry?

brados:
Used to manage 86mph in a Leyland Marathon - they were quick!

Naughty but I took this in Germany in a hire van, it was a quiet Saturday morning and I was on my way home, VW LT35 a few years ago, the rev limiter didn’t work so it just kept going, I couldn’t believe it so I took a picture (genuinely taken by me)

Might keep my head down for a while now I think!

Looks like you were lucky the engine didn’t give out there, not really designed to go into the red, never mind sustain the red

Off the clock through Baldock Tunnel E/B loaded with oranges in FH 12 on analogue tacho with no other traffic

present .

Also depends on day of week , Saturday and Sunday is never over 50 mph

Yeah I know, kind of exciting at the time as well. I must admit the temperature gauge always ran higher than it used to after this run  , glad it was only hired.

mine struggles to do 55 at times. But I did get passed on the m4 by a dark blue stralis and matching trailer on english plates and he had to be doing at least 75-80. the national express coach that followed him looked like it was crawling along by comparison.
Did any one else see this?

Brados, That’s serious red-line engine-screaming stuff…but in a rental,who cares!!! :smiling_imp:

Used to do nights with a Dutch DAF with a coach diff - cruise 80mph all night. Got caught twice -fined once. The speedo was 10 mph slow.

on the down hill section of the M 4 towards the old severn bridge in the eighties the BEDFORD TM scrap bulker i was in got up to about 82 mph before i remembered she was on cut remoulds so a quick reduction was called for. i thought it was the bees knees big cam ■■■■■■■ with a fuller box. i used to race against some green atkinsons from the sway / lymington area, if i could catch them on the hill from bath to the m4 via pensylvania i could pass them and beat them to birds scrap in cardiff. i got the job as a temp as the other lorry in the yard was an ERF 4 x 2 unit the driver had managed to select low range on the down hill section of the m 4 joining at j 18 which sheared the bell housing and rotated the gearbox in the chassis i had never seen such a mess before, even the chassis rails were bent outwards.

If you regularly drive through Cheshire on the M6 keep an eye out for 2 coppers in their unmarked Scania ‘Police Lorry’ which is normally flying about at approx 70mph with no regard for anyone else (all in the name of road safety !!).

Used to drive an ERF 8 legger bulk tanker 87 on a d and 87 everywhere. Used to do a round trip of Buxton-Paisley-Buxton in a comfortable 9 hr drive.
