Hi all, not posted for a long time though I do still look on here for advice but couldn’t find what I need so I’ll start this.
I did the Stobart apprenticeship and had a bit of an injury, they couldn’t wait so we parted ways. Generally on good terms. Anyway now I’m trying to get back behind the wheel so I’ve been joining agencies and contacting companies. Anyway I’ll get to the point I joined Top Gear beginning of June after several phone calls and promises to call me back.
I happened to ring on a day they were desperate for a driver the next day, so someone met me in a cafe to fill out all the forms an get it all sorted. I got home an they phoned saying the job is off, fair enough. They also said they will ring Stobbies and get my reference which they haven’t done yet. I’ve been doing an OU degree so put the driving to one side for a bit but now I need money so I rang Top gear yesterday with another promise for a call back, didn’t happen. Rang today an they said they will call me back, surprisingly they did offering me a job, I think great, but they will call me back with the details, not happened. I rang up to chase it but they said they will call me back. I don’t like pestering people but my question (thanks for sticking with this by the way) Do I have to keep pestering them an annoying them or what? How do I deal with them?
Thanks, Matt.
Welcome to the world of agencys.
Yes keep ringing, but sign on with as many agencys as you can and regardless of what time of day they call or what you they offer dont say NO otherwise you’ll be bottom of their list.
There are some good agencys out there, you just gotta figure out which one suits you best.
Cheers man. They asked if its only class 1s I want and I said I’ll drive anything for them. From their point of view its understandable but they aren’t giving me a chance to build trust. Its so frustrating. Luckily I am near quite a few agencies and have registered with them. I’ve heard about agencies but didn’t really think they can mess about so much haha how i was wrong.
As above
Don’t put all your agency eggs in one basket. Sign onto as many as you can. It took me months to get a break after signing onto what seemed like dozens but when I did it was literally 3 days after signing to them I got offered work and now they’ve got me doing weekends regularly. A couple that i signed to regularly phone asking about ‘availability’ for the following week but no offers were ever forthcoming- now I don’t even answer the phone to them because as far as i’m concerned they’re timewasters. Like you eluded to i’m taking the time to build trust, keep my nose clean and make every drop and collection on the run plan and see where it goes.
…and, when you do get a job/run turn up clean and keen (not Neanderthal). I always ask plenty of questions and am receptive to any advice the client wishes to part with (usually they are really keen to be certain you understand what they want you to do).
Rightly or wrongly I usually contact the agency the day after the job to thank them for thinking of me, to tell that I really enjoyed it (and didnt break anything) and to enquire if there was any feedback from the client.

Agencys are habitual liars in general get used to it, I have bin messed around so much by them it is unreal have got used to it. I even sign up to one to be a drivers mate, got one days work as cover for someone not turning up then nothing. One was really enthusiastic about it says they need drivers say my name- call you back the worst one is send us an email, never get a reply. If they dont want to give you work they wont however much you call/ visit, just find a new agency there are quite a few about.
